It’s quite something seeing the (long) list of people who claim to work on social justice issues in archaeology who are prepared to go to EAA in Athens this year, sometimes sharing sessions with people involved in illegal excavations in the West Bank. bdsmovement.net/news/europea...

At some point we have to accept that the EAA is rotten, and quite honestly, a lot of the folks attending the meeting are okay with being part of it. After a full year of emergency meetings, discussions and resignations, nobody can claim that they don't know what's going on.

I have added the following to my original complaint. I'm posting this because it feels important that EAA members understand the extent of what is happening as so much of it is behind closed doors. Names redacted (the irony!) because I feel forced to do so while the evidence is being withheld.
"I am also concerned about the process and decisions behind the production of the minutes of the meeting on 09.01.2026. XXX's comments about me have been redacted (point XX). I was not consulted about this redaction. Had I been consulted, I would have requested that his comments about me were displayed in full as this would provide members with a full and accurate account of the behaviour of Prof. XXX at the meeting. As the minutes currently stand, they remove the evidence of his behaviour, thus not only protecting Prof. XXX, but also further impinging on my agency in this matter. The redaction, therefore, feels like a further attempt at silencing and obfuscation from the Executive."

Further to the EAA saga and the actions of its leadership...Zena is the editor of the Association's journal, and we now how much hard and unappreciated work that entails. She was attacked in the meeting of 9.1.206, and yet the people in charge seem to want to withhold the evidence. Enough is enough.

Following yesterday's EAA Special Meeting, I have submitted a complaint to the EAA Appeal and Anti-Harassment Committee. I post it here, with names redacted, for any members who were not present. Thank you so much to everyone who has reached out with messages of solidarity and support 🙏💓🙏
In spite of the Safe Space Policy being clearly stated at the beginning of the meeting, Prof. XXXXX targeted me by name, calling for my resignation from my position as Editor of the society's journal. Furthermore, his misuse of my title, referring to me as "Miss Kamash", felt deliberately demeaning. This intimidating behaviour explicitly contravenes the EAA Safe Space Policy. Although he was muted, for which I was grateful, I experienced a panic attack following his comments and did not feel safe to speak for the remainder of the meeting. This was further compounded by not only Prof. XXXXX being allowed to remain in the online meeting, but also being invited to take the floor again after the break. This gives me strong concerns about the effectiveness of the Safe Space Policy.

On a broader point about the effectiveness of the Safe Space Policy, I also note that members whose position aligned with that of Concerned EAA were repeatedly and persistently accused of anti-Semitism throughout the meeting. This is a serious accusation that should not be levelled without due care and evidentiary support. Its use as a blanket accusation seems to have been designed with the explicit aim of silencing and intimidating members aligned with Concerned EAA, which again contravenes the Safe Space Policy and should have been dealt with more robustly during the meeting.

Lecture poster. SPMA logo and name. Geoff Egan Memorial Lecture, 18:00, 16 December 2025, York Medical Society. Dr Beatriz Marin-Aguilera lectures on An Archaeology of Radical Tenderness. Archaeology as a discipline is at an ethical crossroad. Claims to be neutral and to depoliticise our practice — or to defend the status of archaeology as an 'objective science'— have alarmingly (re)gained traction. This turn away from humans —past and present—, their suffering, and the ethics of care is the product of unaddressed postcolonial demands that hide our privileged position as (white) archaeologists.
Drawing on a long tradition of the social in Latin American arts and scholarship, I propose an 'archaeology of radical tenderness' that combines protest and profound critical thought with deep care, affection, and vulnerability, especially in the face of systemic harm and oppressive political structures. Using the archaeological record and the living experience, the archaeology of radical tenderness challenges inherited power structures and colonial histories offering new alternatives for our discipline as a site of openness, resistance, and relatedness. The archaeology of radical tenderness advocates for an embodied-situated practice and a critical and loving approach to social justice, emphasising collective care, the transformation of communities through shared vulnerability, and the healing needed to birth new (more equal) futures.Map. Central York. Locations of destination bus stops for services from University of York Campus East are shown. A walking route betwen the York Medical Society and Crescent Community Centre is shown by a dotted blue line. Tuesday 16 December 18:00 Geoff Egan Memorial Lecture at York Medical Society, followed by the Antiquity Quiz and TAG Party at Crescent Community Centre from 19:00.

Starmer understands that the role of PM historically is to advance colonial interests and suppress working classes at home. Unleasing racist hooligans from a settler colony on a British working class community with a large Muslim population is entirely in line with that.

CFP: "Between Ivory Towers and Portacabins: Dialogues between professional archaeology and academia on practice, theory and cross-sector research" Co-organised by @leilaar.bsky.social, York PhD student working with MOLA to understand digital recording for @tag2025york.bsky.social
CFP poster:

Commercial, museum, and academic archaeology have had a historically complex relationship, shaped by sector-led constraints concerning differing methodologies, objectives, and institutional practice. While all
sectors contribute valuable insights, collaboration between them remains limited, often hindered by differing aims and objectives, funding constraints, and disciplinary biases. Rather than focusing solely on the
structural boundaries that separate them, we highlight initiatives emerging from fieldwork that are reshaping how archaeological data is produced and managed, with a research-driven, critical, and socially
engaged outlook. We begin from the premise that professional archaeology cannot be reduced to a purely technical or operational task.
This session offers a space for dialogue between professional archaeology and the academic sphere, aiming to share experiences, practices, and reflections that allow us to rethink the often-fragmented relationship between both fields. It considers the consequences and challenges of cross-sector research while foregrounding the epistemological potential of professional archaeology through collaborations with professionals, universities, and communities. Attention is also given to the need for a more joined-up
approach to archaeological material, data collection and interpretation, and look at how a wider engagement with theory might be useful outside of academia.
Participants are invited to critically examine institutional frameworks, working conditions, administrative constraints, ethical practice and the tensions that arise in the margins of everyday archaeological practice.
We especially welcome contributions from those who have implemented collaborative projects, developed innovative methodologies, or engaged in critical reflection on their archaeological practice—and who wish
to collectively explore new ways of connecting theory and action on the ground.
