DIRECTED BY KIYOSHI KUROSAWA 📹 Coming to the Criterion Channel in October!
Directed by Kiyoshi Kurosawa

Merging psychological dread with existential inquiry, the Japanese auteur uses genre trappings to probe the alienation and anxiety underpinning modern life. Quivering with quiet unease that gathers with slow-burn intensity, the J-horror touchstones Cure and Pulse are disturbing visions of psychic disintegration, while thrillers like Serpent's Path and Cloud blend suspense with social commentary. And in sui generis dramas like Bright Future and To the Ends of the Earth, Kurosawa brings his style to stories of characters cast adrift in an increasingly uncertain world.

Record cover says: The Replacements. I will dare. 12 inch 45. And a black and white photo is an alternate image of the band members sitting on a porch roof that was later on the cover of the album Let It BeThe back cover lists two b-side songs: 20th Century Boy by T. It is very much not a good thing that this was the key take-away from the UNEP's latest report. It's a nice illustration of the effect that carbon removal has on media. The promise of fixing a threat without changing the status quo is just the exact fantasy being sought out
Renewables are
no longer the
key solution for
climate change
Tim McDonnell
Semafor Climate and Energy Editor
The United Nations Environment Programme issued a stark
assessment Wednesday of the trajectory of global temperatures. The
target cap adopted by the 2015 Paris Agreement — I .5 degrees Celsius
above pre-industrial levels — is guaranteed to be overshot, the report says.
To completely avert disastrous conditions for human lives and livelihoods
is no longer possible. Our best shot is to brace for a much hotter world,
and then try hard to cool things off. And for that, the report concludes,
"rapid upscaling of CDR is critical."
I-N agencies and international scientific panels have endorsed carbon
dioxide removal (that is, withdrawing C02 from the air rather than
preventing its release) before, but rarely framed it as such a foundational
need. The field ranges from the ultra-low-tech — i.e., plant more trees —
to all manner of cutting-edge carbon-sucking contraptions. Today about
2.2 billion metric tons of C02 are withdrawn annually through these
methods. Fixing the climate will require that figure to rise as much as ten-
fold by 2100, the UN report finds.
The report is clear that replacing fossil fuels in the energy system is still
essential; every ton not emitted now is one less that has to be drawn out
later. But renewable energy, while we could certainly always use more of
it, is basically doing fine. Global investment has jpped down from a 2024
peak, but not plunged. Costs continue to fall rapidly. AI, EVs, and air
conditioners are driving an historic surge in power demand where evelY
electron is welcome. Even in the US, with vanishing tax credits and a
hostile government, I rarely hear any serious investors describe clean
energy (except offshore wind, for now) as uneconomic.
CDR is a different story. The trouble is, it requires huge amounts of land,
time, and/or cash. "Even if global fossil C02 emissions reached zero and
deforestation were halted entirely, i…

This is pretty fucking wild. I had assumed in a worst case scenario he would target blue zip codes and toss ballots based on technicalities but this is even worse than I imagined.
Not only is this system astonishingly untested, USPS has simultaneously implemented an
impracticable zero percent failure rate.
13 When ballots are submitted to USPS in large-volume
batches, if any one ballot in the batch cannot be verified against the Portal, all ballots in that
batch will be rejected. For example, if a state election official brings a batch of 10,000 ballots to
USPS and USPS is unable to match just one of those ballots against the Portal – because, for
example, someone has recently changed their name after marriage or they’ve moved – then
USPS would refuse to mail the remaining 9,999 ballots as well. As the whistleblower notes,

Wow. Proponents of the ICE taser gloves are openly saying that one reason they love the gloves is that they doesn’t leave any marks or proof that they were used, making it harder for people to sue when they’re shocked excessively.
Mother Jones

"In today's society, you know, everybody's filming everything, everybody has a cell phone," Glueck said. If an officer punches someone on camera, that can go viral in an instant; even a standard taser leaves puncture wounds. But "the glove is low optic, and it looks better on camera, and it looks better to those witnesses. With a glove, there are no burn marks or scars."But local police across the country are still eagerly buying the gloves—in large part so that they can harm people and avoid being sued for it. It's been successful "from the patrolmen to the jailers," Lumpkin County Sheriff Stacy Jarrard said in a Compliant Technologies promotional video. "It's been a great tool as far as mitigating liability," according to Nelson County Jailer Justin Hall.
Bob Couey of the Floyd County Sheriff's Department sung the GLOVE's praises, too: "I highly recommend these gloves to anybody that's looking for a utility they can use that is conducive to not leading to lawsuits."
