David Hildago of Los Lobos turns 72 today. Here is Jon Bream’s Minneapolis Star and Tribune preview and review of the band’s local debut at the 7th Street Entry on 2/2/1984.
You could call it burrito boogie, punk 'n' roll or rock 'n' roll with Latin seasoning. I'd call Los Lobos the best dance band to come along in the past year. Actually, the Los Angeles quartet has been around since 1974, but its 1983
EP, "And a Time To Dance," is gaining the group its firet national exposure. Los Lobos will debut locally Thursday at the 7th St. Entry

Los Lobos sparks a dance fiesta at 7th Street Entry
Without much hype or fanfare, Mexican American culture has contributed significantly to popular music: Richie Valens, Sam the Sham & the Pharoahs, Sir Douglas Quintet, ? & the Mysterians, Cannibal & the Head-hunters, Santana, Malo, Freddy Fender, Johnny Rodriguez, Joe (King) Carrasco & the Crowns, But none of those performers can match the elan and versatile musicality of Los Lobos, who performed Thursday at the 7th Street Entry at First Ave-nue.
Los Lobos is the quintessential American band. These Chicanos from East Los Angeles play nearly every kind of American music imagi-nable: blues, R&B, rockabilly, zy-deco, country, polka, jazz, Cajun, Western swing and roots rock 'n' roll with a strong flavoring of Mexican sounds. No matter what direction they turn, Los Lobos will keep your feet dancing. They could be the ultimate party band.
The joint was jumping Thursday as a couple hundred people squeezed into the 7th St. Entry. "Td like to dedicate this song to your feet," gui-tarist-accordionist David Hidalgo said to a dervish dancer before playing "Let's Say Goodnight." "They're the happiest feet I've ever seen in my life."
It didn't matter that it was the second time that night that Los Lobos played "Goodnight," a rip-roaring saxophone-meets-accordion original that kicks off the band's outstanding
EP, "And a Time To Dance." It simply was an evening to dance. Regardless of whether it was a Mexican polka or corrida with Spanish lyrics. a Richie Valens rocker or a Howlin' Wolf blues standard, heads were bobbing and feet were shuffling. The ALT text for the review starts on the preview ALT text.

This was one muy caliente band. And a melting pot of Americans - Chica-nos, Indians, whites and blacks - were digging it. Los Lobos came together in the East
L.A. barrio to play traditional Mexican folk music. They made a couple of albums and attracted enough attention to be the subject of a local TV documentary. But in '81 the quartet realized the limits of its musical purism and switched to electric instruments and a polyglut of styles.
The Blasters, a popular L.A. roots-rock band, took a liking to Los Lobos and used them as an opening act.
That led to Los Lobos' landing songs in the films "Eating Raoul" and
"Chan Is Missing," which led to a contract with Slash Records. T-Bone Burnett and Blasters saxophonist Steve Berlin coproduced "And a Time to Dance," and Berlin has
Joined the band on the road.
Lead vocals are divided between hefty Hidalgo, who has one of those high, vulnerable teen-rock voices, and chunky guitarist Cesar Rosas, whose voice is gruff and powerful.
Although Rosas looked great with his sunglasses and goatee, neither of the singers had much presence. In fact. the whole band was rather poker-faced. But what they lacked in stage manner, Los Lobos made up for with musical spirit and skill.
Rosas peeled off some hot blues licks on Freddie King's "Tore Down" and Hidalgo proved equally adept on gul-tar and button accordion. Drummer Loule Perez and bassist Conrad Lozano were the efficiently versatile rhythm section that kept the bar-goers dancing Saxopbonist Berlin, who has played on and off with Los Lobos for two years, added the right blues, jazz or mariachi element to the material.
The biggest crowd pleaser was a crazed version of Valens inevitable Chicano cliche, "La Bamba," which brought whoops and hollers from the revelers. But the remalning hour and 40 minutes of music indicated that Los Lobos' brand of burrito brogie is truly essential American music.

A review of “All Shook Down” in City Pages, October 1991.
The Replacements All Shook Down (Sire/Reprise) A Il shook Westerberg placements" down has is album been right: bled proves the damn that new near Paul "Redry. But was he stabbed or did he slash his own wrists? Maybe a little of both. Paralyzed by his fear of both artistic honesty and commercial success, Westerberg has ultimately been done in by his refusal to deliberately please anyone and in the process he's exhausted the patience of fans still straining to like the band. "Wait 'til next year," is the secret credo of 'Mats fans who insist that, when he's ready, Westerberg can and will deliver his fully realized pop Bible- an impossibly mythic fusion of stark, personal statement and breakthrough commercial potential. But with the arrival of the 'Mats third straight "transitional" album, maybe it's time for a new credo: The dream is over.

Which didn't have to be a tragedy, but it isbecause instead of awaking with a brave new start (a la Lennon's Plastic Ono Band) Westerberg merely hits the snooze button (like McCartney's eponymous solo debut). Not the longrumored Westerberg solo album, it may as well be: Bandmates Stinson, Mars, and Dunlap are lumped in with the "musicians who played on this recorded thing" credit on the album liner (as "is co-producer and exclusive songwriter Westerberg), which only adds fuel to the rumors that the band was all but locked out of the studio to make room for special guests (John Cale, Terry Reid). All Shook Down is the Replacements' ghostwritten suicide note that should have been slugged The Cheese Stands Alone. Instead of pandering to anyone's expectations, Westerberg has submitted a throwaway demo tape as the Replacements' eighth album, as if to prove he doesn't have as much talent as you think he does. Which might have been hilarious as a concept album about artistic mediocrity, but unfortunately this is no joke.

All Shook Down is unflinchingly slight and deliberately incomplete, easily the Replacements' sloppiest record since 19…

It was this month, October, in 1959 when Robert Zimmerman started using the stage name Bob Dillon at the Ten o’clock Scholar in Minneapolis. He’d just arrived from Hibbing for his first year at the University of Minnesota and was trying to make a (new) name for himself at the folk clubs of Dinkytown

"Do you mind if I play?" Bob asked when he wandered into The Scholar sometime in October. "I want to be a folk singer."
Lee chatted with him briefly, learned that Bob had some experience, and told him it was all right to play. "I'm not going to pay you," …

Currently nominated for listing in the National Register of Historic Places, there is a minor reference to the fact that Prince had a band that practiced at the home located at 3621 Portland Avenue. That’s not the reason the home is being recognized, but it’s interesting nonetheless.

The Minneapolis Star published Jon Bream’s glowing review of the “Credit in Heaven” double album by the Suburbs on September 29, 1981.
Say yes to the Suburbs, maybe to Stones The music is well-conceived and often excellent, the lyrical is focused, the production is professional, the vocals are affecting, and the packaging is first-rate, with excellent back-cover photos. If there is a major problem, it's that this project was too ambitious. To come up with a 17-song, tworecord set of material essentially in the same vein is too much. But three sides of this collection are highly rewarding and a noteworthy improvement over last year's encouraging debut album. The Suburbs, a quintet from five western suburbs, have been a mainstay on the local new-wave circuit for the past 4½ years.

In fact, their following has become so Rolling Stones Update: No word yet on whether the band has accepted an offer for a Nov. 21 concert at the St. Paul Civic Center, but promoter Randy Levy of Schon Productions is encouraged. "They [the Stones and tour director Bill Graham] have decided not to add a third show in Los Angeles and San Francisco," Levy said late Monday. "So it looks b better for St.

Paul. They haven't decided about adding a second show in Seattle [in 59,400-seat Kingdome, which would eliminate the 17,500-seat Civic Center show]. The next general deadline is Thursday. But they could decide late tonight who knows? The chances still look 50-50." large that the band has graduated from small clubs to boogie bars that can accommodate more than 1,000 persons. Musically, the Suburbs are, for lack of a better comparison, our answer to Roxy Music.

They juxtapose muted funk rhythms with lounge piano and occasional sax and guitar solos. The vocals are droll but not as cadaverous as those of Roxy's Bryan Ferry. The Suburbs seem to cultivate eccentricities in their dress-pompadours, baggy suits and bow ties are favored these days--as well as the world view expressed in their songs. These bright, seemingly alienated suburban kids--actually they're in their mid-20s-are as Jon Bream Music And now for a vinyl update. TH…Til I Gain Control Again" have hit potential. This mysterious Social Distortion flyer in my archives appears to be from a 1989 show. It was probably on the wall or door at First Avenue, or they were handing them out at the exit at a previous show. That presumably explains the venue not being listed. Looking forward to seeing them again tonight.

Numero Group, who released Hüsker Dü’s “1985: The Miracle Year,” will bring their record store pop up tour to Minneapolis this weekend, September 19-20, 2026. See their website and Instagram for more details.
Hüsker Dü’ “1985: The Miracle Year” packaging and albums. We've been all over the map this year and are
about to wrap up an absolutely killer summer in New York City. We realized we have some stock leftover though and don't want to come back to the warehouse in Chicago with a truckload of records, so we're going to be making a few pitstops on our way home. Once again helmed by Numero co-founder Ken Shipley and Simple Machines co-mastermind Kristin Thomson, we're taking the van through a select few exclusive
locations along the East Coast and Midwest that we missed last time. Heading out on September gth, well spend a few weeks carting records to a bunch of different cities that have been patiently waiting. Expect big sales, titles both in and out of print, CDs, LPs, Cassettes, shirts, hats, Duster cats and dingers galore. As always, we highly encourage you to RSVP so that we can make every record dream come true, and you can get a discount.Saturday, September 19, 2026 -
