It’s a mark of the corruption of our whole way of thinking about the world that trying to meet a planetary emergency is routinely described as “ideological”, while continuing to accelerate it is presented as “pragmatic” and “economic”.

With the years of cheating by City, surely the Premier League titles have to be retrospectively awarded to Liverpool? Especially in the years when Liverpool didn't finish second.

The people doing demand management at institutions are academics. I'll accept funders asking institutions to demand manage when institutions can ask funders to cover their teaching commitments in return

It's a trial. Grant funding in the UK is pretty broken, with panels and reviewers overwhelmed. Time to grant is shameful and huge amounts of academic time is wasted in the current system. Personally I'm glad to see they are at least trying something, even if this isn't perfect

Human beings were designed to experience and travel and love and create art and the reason everyone is depressed is that we have to sit in front of machines filled with every nightmare imaginable and say ‘nothing from me’ in teams calls every day just so we can afford crisps

One of my all time favourites. Of all the space movies, this may be the MOST space movie. The whole thing is about the challenges of operating in space, and accuracy is pretty good overall. One of the best depictions of humans in deep space.

The world still exists. It just happens that the forces that think "we could monetize people having this problem" are winning vs the forces that think "we could help people having this problem." And the forces that thought "we could prevent this problem in the first place" are long dead.

My 11yo son read Adrian Mole recently as it was on the school reading list. I was sure it would be hopelessly dated but he really enjoyed it. I guess sometimes things really are universal, even if the people in the story do have landlines.

It is completely right to treat the far right mobs roaming our streets as a national security issue. Government has been far too complacent about this for over two years now. This is interlinked with failures to regulate social media platforms and the collapse of domestic policing and intelligence.

Even leaving any politics at all aside: as general rule, no state can allow a group of masked men to be able to close down critical infrastructure. This is basic stuff.

I find it baffling that Labour does not seem to get this. By equivocating on such a core issue, they’re making their own voters unsure about the core values of the party / government and hence more susceptible to voting for someone else.

TV series? Cool! I hope they do 2 hours of plot stretched out over 10 hours with tedious filler flashbacks, made with a quarter of the budget a 2 hour movie would have had, then whiff the ending so they can maybe do season 2 in 2030.

that's right, Bruce Campbell www.mensjournal.com/entertainmen...
When asked how it’s been for him to see the series transform since its indie beginnings way back in 1981 with director Sam Raimi, Campbell revealed his one issue with the recent installments.

“I’d like more humor back in. The three features have been mostly humorless, and I personally have a problem with that,” he said, echoing a sentiment shared among some of the franchise’s fans. “There’s no point for these to get too grim. You can be scary without being grim.”

“A little more humor wouldn’t kill you,” he added. “And one hero that you really can root for. Ash is an idiot, but you want him to survive.”

“Modern filmmakers love to color their movies like a David Fincher movie, like a hospital room, you know?” Campbell continued. “Gray-green, like a garage. Garage lighting. And so, okay, it’s a choice. It’s not mine. I think even a horror movie can look pretty. Why not throw them off? Make it all look pretty and wonderful, and then let them have it.”

As a lifelong Essex resident, I think this might be it. Perhaps also with City money moving into beautiful rural villages and living well, there's maybe a more acute sense of inequality for the have nots, breeding resentment in those already leaning that way?
