"If they want my data, they can pay for it!" Thomas Ryberg, Professor of Digital Learning at Aalborg University shares his journey of leaving big tech: ✅ He switched to Tuta Mail ❤️ ✅ Replaced Twitter with Mastodon ✅ Doesn't use Meta products & More! Read his story😍 👉 tuta.com/blog/intervi...
screenshot of a LinkedIn post that Thomas Ryberg posted, "The slow journey towards a more sustainable digital ecology - latest steps: Tutamail

Like many others, I am slowly trying to filter myself out of digital ecologies that are not sustainable. I'm not so fond of the vocabulary about Big Tech or the Tech giants, because I think it blurs the fact that it's the business models and the underlying economic logic that are the problem. This also means, for example, that we have an unsustainable agriculture and that we make a large number of choices that may provide a short-term economic gain, but in the long run are not very sustainable.

I'd like to move towards technologies that are open-source, ad-free, that don't collect data (monitor) to increase profit, or use design devices that unnecessarily try to maximize usage (again to maximize profit), etc.

So now I've created a Tuta email and want to see if I can't start using it to phase out my use of Google's services (have been using duckduckgo as a search service for a long time) and also switched from Twitter to Mastodon - Bluesky is certainly more going forward, but is dependent on investors who have to show a profit, So it's probably a long time before it will suffer from the same problems. I left Facebook in 2016 and have not been on any of Meta's services (instagram, whatsapp etc.).

I have an old computer, which I have to see if I can revive it with a Linux installation. There are lots of services I still depend on, e.g. through work (Teams, Co-pilot, Office365, etc.), and it's not easy to change that (but it's actually something that the Danish universities should really start looking at). Will probably need some help with Linux, so if anyone knows of Linux parties in the Aalborg area, please give a hint.

It's going to be a slow movement, and you just have to admit that it's hard to do it all at once. Slowly but steady!"
