Young people need to learn to read and write. They need to develop the capacities to think their OWN thoughts, and express their OWN ideas and opinions. Literacy matters.

I spent all day teaching The Oresteia and Woolf’s To The Lighthouse. Four straight hours of talking with my students about motherhood and the abyss! 🤰⚫️😆

Almost every single student who has found me this week wants to talk about AI. A couple reflections. One student has taken three AI courses in philosophy, health sciences and comm. They’re basically the same class. As it turns out, it doesn’t take a lot of classes to “learn” ai.

My friend and colleague Matt Dinan just published an excellent piece in the New York Times about the challenge of engaging students in the “algorithmic age”, and about how our Great Books program at St. Thomas attempts to meet that challenge. www.nytimes.com/2026/08/17/o...

Just a reminder that no review of any Homer adaptation will ever top Roger Ebert killing Troy in two sentences
"Troy" is based on the epic poem The Iliad
by Homer, according to the credits.
Homer's estate should sue.

Three panel comic. Panel 1: a chimpanzee in an enclosure is sitting on the ground and painting abstract streaks of color on a canvas lying in the grass. Panel 2: a couple is standing outside the enclosure, looking in. The girl says about the painting chimpanzee, “aww, that’s cute.” Panel 3: the chimpanzee is alone in his dimly lit studio, head in hands, holding a lit cigarette. He looks completely dejected, feeling misunderstood. There is a pair of glasses, a glass of whisky, crumpled paper, and an unfinished painting laid out on the desk in front of him. The walls and floor space of his studio are covered in his abstract paintings on canvases and paper. There is also a marble sculpture of a banana beside him.

After Donald Trump’s second election, I realised the insidious hold my phone had over my life. So I turned to something I’d loved in childhood to better occupy my attention

It's interesting to think that one of the big drivers of generative AI is very extremely obviously the weird relationship with their mortality that billionaires have. Middle-aged and over billionaires, desperately and pathetically seeking immortality, turning to whatever snake oil promises it.

People can say it’s utopian or dreamy but it’s a fact that you have to believe new things are possible, fundamentally, in order to make them real. You have to make the choice to believe that more than this is possible & not be resigned to this being the way things have to be because it’s not at all.

“I learned what I consider to be the two principles of journalism. The first is that objectivity is not the same as neutrality. If there is an aggressor and a victim, a liar & an honest person, a corrupt individual and an honourable one, then your task is to describe all that clearly & forcefully.”

Bezos isn't destroying the Washington Post because it isn't profitable. He's destroying the Washington Post because he's calculated that a robust free press threatens the ability of his class to warp society around their interests

Sometimes I wonder if the world is going to have to rebuild journalism from the ground up. Like, we obviously, desperately need it. And if the super-rich are going to buy up all the legacy outlets and destroy them - or turn them into propaganda machines -- we're going to have to start over.

After all, why not? Why shouldn't I keep it?

You're absolutely right — you found it, it's been with you a long while, and it's only natural to feel fond of something that's served you so well, especially when someone like Gandalf suddenly seems to want it for himself.

Hard to overstate how bad this is for politics. It's basically the same business model as scam e-mails from a Nigerian prince, except it's way more reliable and profitable, oh, and it destroys democracy.

Reporters and citizens should investigate these kinds of changes thoroughly. Who "drafted" this new policy? Who initiated this review and change? Who was advocating for it? Who, specifically, are the people saying "We should relax about swastikas"?
