Young people need to learn to read and write. They need to develop the capacities to think their OWN thoughts, and express their OWN ideas and opinions. Literacy matters.

The “look on the bright side” view is that’s it’s better for this to happen in week 3 than week 10. Gotta look themselves in the mirror. Figure out what’s fixable and what just isn’t getting fixed this season. D-line worries me. They can’t buy a sack.

Outrageous!

Especially love seeing it when they’ve had an unproductive run on first down, so you can pretty much guarantee they’ll be in 3rd and 10+.

When you’ve got the opportunity to automatically lose 3 yards on second down, you just have to take it. It’s basically voluntarily taking a sack at this point.

One of the baddest men in the league. He is just awesome.

Despite A LOT of weirdness and bad luck, there are some signs of improvement.

I don’t think any team in the league has as many gut-wrenching losses as the Cowboys. A couple times a year they seem to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory.

I spent all day teaching The Oresteia and Woolf’s To The Lighthouse. Four straight hours of talking with my students about motherhood and the abyss! 🤰⚫️😆

Every single time. Defenders just sitting there waiting for him to catch it.

I swear these slow-developing horizontal passes NEVER work! Same story last year. Player catches the ball and is immediately tackled for a loss of yards by three defenders. Feel like it’s been about 10 years since the Eagles have been able to run that play.

Here’s what I wonder: Is the absence of Saquon and Goedert forcing them to play differently? Has it unlocked something? Probs just Jalen dealing. Either way, one of the best games I’ve seen him play.

I'm Canadian. To me, the guns are actually the most important part of this video. DT and his goons live in a hyper-masculine fantasy world where they think you can just use violence and threats of violence to get your way. How's that working for you in Iran, Donald?

So much ink has been spilled on the effects social media has on young people. When the story is finally told by scholars, I think it will be clear that it was adult men who had their brains scrambled by the Internet more than any other group.

Almost every single student who has found me this week wants to talk about AI. A couple reflections. One student has taken three AI courses in philosophy, health sciences and comm. They’re basically the same class. As it turns out, it doesn’t take a lot of classes to “learn” ai.

My friend and colleague Matt Dinan just published an excellent piece in the New York Times about the challenge of engaging students in the “algorithmic age”, and about how our Great Books program at St. Thomas attempts to meet that challenge. www.nytimes.com/2026/08/17/o...

Just a reminder that no review of any Homer adaptation will ever top Roger Ebert killing Troy in two sentences
"Troy" is based on the epic poem The Iliad
by Homer, according to the credits.
Homer's estate should sue.

Three panel comic. Panel 1: a chimpanzee in an enclosure is sitting on the ground and painting abstract streaks of color on a canvas lying in the grass. Panel 2: a couple is standing outside the enclosure, looking in. The girl says about the painting chimpanzee, “aww, that’s cute.” Panel 3: the chimpanzee is alone in his dimly lit studio, head in hands, holding a lit cigarette. He looks completely dejected, feeling misunderstood. There is a pair of glasses, a glass of whisky, crumpled paper, and an unfinished painting laid out on the desk in front of him. The walls and floor space of his studio are covered in his abstract paintings on canvases and paper. There is also a marble sculpture of a banana beside him.

Thank you for this. Increasingly on social media we can see a "parallel pipe-line" being built to target young women. Instead of "alpha males" and crypto, it's all about homesteading, natural ingredients, etc. The message: don't trust science or the government.

True. Philly's strength is that star players give them many "paths to victory." Carter can get a crucial sack. Barkley can break a big run. DeJean or Baun can get a turnover. Just need 1 or 2 to happen per game. But that was also my source of hope last year and it didn't work out. Fingers crossed!

Wow. That’s more wins than I expect. Feels like the first six weeks could be full of pitfalls and close losses that ”shoulda” been wins. I kind of think 10-11 wins.

I think what's been revealed during this term is that he only thinks in terms of bribes and violence. Bribes make deals. Violence makes people obey. That's his entire understanding of human psychology. It's why he thinks he can just drop a bomb and make people in another country do what he wants.

Interesting how the media narrative is that Nick is bad, and Jalen is bad, but somehow the Eagles win between 11-14 games a year.

It's interesting to think that one of the big drivers of generative AI is very extremely obviously the weird relationship with their mortality that billionaires have. Middle-aged and over billionaires, desperately and pathetically seeking immortality, turning to whatever snake oil promises it.

People can say it’s utopian or dreamy but it’s a fact that you have to believe new things are possible, fundamentally, in order to make them real. You have to make the choice to believe that more than this is possible & not be resigned to this being the way things have to be because it’s not at all.
