I would love to ask a prominent BBC journalist to give me an example of an illegitimate concern. Is seems to me that it has become a question not of fact, logic, or ethics but of volume. If a big enough proportion of a village was anxious about Bigfoot or Chemtrails, BBC would cover it in a way...

Bill Bryson on the RNLI in "The Road to Little Dribbling : more notes from a small island" (2015)
I had never really stopped to consider what an extraordinary thing the Royal National Lifeboat Institution is. Think about it. A troubled ship calls for help, and eight people - teachers, plumbers, the guy
who runs the pub - drop everything and put to sea, whatever the weather, asking no questions, imperilling their own lives, to try to help strangers. Is there anything more brave and noble than that? The RNLI - I looked this up later - is an organization run by volunteers, supported entirely by public donations. It maintains 233 stations around the coast of Britain and averages twenty-two call-outs per day. It saves 350 lives a year on average.

Thread. New immigration statistics out today. For all the people saying 'I don't have a problem with asylum, only the people who arrive illegally'; That's not how the asylum system works.

When you're living on a Home Office budget of just £49.18 a week, it is hard to get all the food you need to stay healthy. That's why Hope partners with St. Vincent de Paul to provide a free weekly food parcel for all our clients -- because we believe that no one should ever go hungry.

This guidance from the charity commission on safety for charities supporting unpopular causes is very reminiscent of Terry #Pratchett Igor, noting that you always needed a safe back door for when the mob comes with pitchforks

This is literally ridiculous. Extending the period to 56 days was the bare minimum and still a tight turnaround. To go back on this is a complete waste of time. Increasing the number of refugees who are made street homeless is an absolute safeguarding risk in this political climate.

Government plans to halve the ‘move on period’ for Refugees, reducing it to 28 days. 28 days to find a job, get a deposit, and find somewhere to live. Thousands of street homeless refugees by the time winter hits. www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2025...
