We need to be honest. Today is a worrying day for all who believe in sanctuary and our country's diversity. The results so far aren't today’s only story, nor only a story of today, but the fear many of us are feeling must be acknowledged. We also need to talk about hope and how we keep fighting. 🧵

For years, politicians have insisted that scapegoating people seeking sanctuary & throwing migrant communities under the bus is the only way to win election. Yesterday proved what we already knew to be true: people are far kinder and wiser. Our communities stand together. Politicians: take note.

Any idea of scrapping of tuition fees is for the birds while government continues an ongoing vendetta against migrants. Universities will struggle to survive the lost revenue from International Students. And that’s parking the fiscal catastrophe fewer Migrant workers pose.

The Refugee Convention enshrines you may travel by irregular means to seek protection. Put people in a boat by denying them all other means, then punish the survivors by forcing them back. More lives lost, more damage, more legal challenges, still no courage in leadership.

Tomorrow, this thread will be illegal. Defending non-violent activists, who sprayed red paint in an effort to STOP mass death, will be a crime equivalent to supporting neo-Nazi terror groups. That's terrifying. And anyone who cares about asylum rights should be very worried 🧵
Statement over a Palestinian flag opposes the proscription of Palestine Action as a terror organisation and reads "a deeply dangerous and wholly unjustified attach on freedom of speech, political organising, and democracy itself".

The racist violence in Ballymena is devastating. What makes it worse is that we've seen this before. To keep our communities safe, we need politicians to stop the relentless scapegoating of newcomers and show that we are a community of solidarity, not strangers.
Statement reads: "The racist violence that has driven people from their homes and caused destruction on the streets of Ballymena is utterly horrifying. It is the behaviour of violent extremists with no interest in justice or the safety of their communities, looking only for an excuse to express their hatred. To see families in Northern Ireland - where people are still recovering from the trauma of colonisation - feeling forced to display Union Jacks in their windows to protect their homes is particularly appalling. It shows the total disregard of these rioters for anyone who does not endorse their divisive politics, whether they are migrants or not."
It goes on to compare this violence to the racist riots seen last summer and says politicians must end the scapegoating of migrants and return to a politics that reaffirms their rights, working to connect people and show that we are communities of solidarity not strangers.
