it's good to see this laid out clearly, but i'm once again going to point to Peter Naur's 1985 essay "Programming as Theory Building"

The present discussion is a contribution to the understanding of what programming is. It suggests that programming properly should be regarded as an activity by which the programmers form or achieve a certain kind of insight, a theory, of the matters at hand. This suggestion is in contrast to what appears to be a more common notion, that programming should be regarded as a production of a program and certain other texts.

An update on this post from yesterday (Wed, 10/07): the @nytimes.com has updated their report, now adding "though some experts have cast doubt on that account", with a link to Hannah Barker's paper that I had flagged. "Some experts"! There's not a medieval historian who disagrees. Anyway, progress.

It's not reasonable to ask immigrants to assimilate, actually. Bilingual schools do, and should, exist. Things are and can be written in multiple languages. For now, for better or worse, English is the fast-track to many better jobs, yeah, true. But for the price of "abandon your culture"? Why.

I'm cynical enough to think that the "free" Remastered Edition upgrade isn't "generous" it's a marketing spend to get players ready for Witcher 4. Which is fine! I'm going to play it. I just wouldn't consider it "extraordinarily generous."

Voting for the lesser of two evils might be acceptable for an election, maybe two, if there's actual improvement. But it can't be your actual strategy. For one, things will keep getting worse, cuz you're voting for evil, but also, it's demoralizing and infuriating to the electorate
