In my continued dive into my Steam backlog I just played South of the Circle, and wow. A small game that packs a huge punch. Super unique dialogue choice system. Impeccable art & VO. I think I loved the soundtrack most of all. store.steampowered.com/app/1811040/...

I've been spending the last couple years analyzing my reading taste and I think my #1 genre is "person just trying their best."

Didn't get its due because it's indie pub'd, but the Cursebreakers series by Madeleine Nakamura is this dark academia fantasy about a bipolar professor who uncovers a conspiracy at his institution but isn't sure he can believe his own mind. It's truly incredible and more people should read it.

Didn't expect to be unemployed on my 10th anniversary in gamedev, but here we are. I still don't regret switching careers and leaving LA. I've met my favorite people in the world making games. I've gotten to work on dream properties. I've gotten to hear my words performed by incredible voice actors.

Just finished the astounding She's a Doll by Barbara Truelove. I already liked Of Monsters and Mainframes a lot. She's a Doll is even better. A young woman is murdered and ends up haunting a creepy doll. How's she going to get her revenge on the guy who killed her now?

genAI has replaced what was my entry-level job at Telltale, which was about 75% "taking notes in meetings." It meant I got to attend meetings way above my pay grade and learn SO much SO fast. I did a GDC talk that's like 60% obsolete now about it.

Someone should make some kind of video game curriculum that teaches you how to play various types of games at gradually increasing difficulty for those of us who haven't been gaming since we were children teach me how to platform I am so bad at it

Hi there! I'm Hannah MacLeod, a senior narrative designer/game writer coming up on 10 years in the game industry. I'm currently looking for work (remote or in CA)! I also have a cat named Booey who loves zoom calls, if that helps. www.linkedin.com/in/macleoh/

So You Want to Be a Wizard by Diane Duane. I remember finding it at a local indie bookstore when I was about 8, cracking it open, and feeling seen for the first time ever. Here was another girl who, when running from bullies, heads to a library for safety.

I feel like we need a reminder sometimes, so there is no amount of extra hours you could've worked to keep from getting laid off. Seniority, company loyalty, importance to the project - none of it matters when you're a number on a spreadsheet. Anyone telling you different is selling something.

Rolled credits! Mythwrecked is so good. It's like being wrapped up in a warm blanket while solving a mystery. If you like Greek mythology at ALL, play this game!

Started playing Mythwrecked: Ambrosia Island in between runs of Slay the Spire and I'm really enjoying it! Love the character designs especially. And the story has me so intrigued!

I have made the grave mistake of trying Slay the Spire and my partner suggested I give myself a weekly time limit so that I will do anything other than playing Slay the Spire

This was good! Not my fav in the series, but a solid read. And it definitely didn't conclude anything, so my only hope is many more Ana & Din mysteries to come...

Happy Book Birthday to Kendra's Real Hero Shit: Harder Than It Looks! I just finished reading and volume 2 is such a step up from volume 1. If you want a queer as hell romp through a unique fantasy world and a group of chucklefucks with TRAUMA, please read this series. It really is that good.

Got so annoyed watching a Return of the Obra Dinn stream that I redownloaded the game to give it another try. I might still ragequit it again when I start feeling too dumb, but for now I'm having a good time!

If you liked Babel by RF Kuang or Blood Over Bright Haven by ML Wang, highly recommend checking out The Language of Liars by SL Huang. It's a sci-fi novella about language/translation as oppression and had a reveal that shocked me in the best way. Also it broke my 5-star drought! Highly recommend.

Not sure if this will get to the right people, but: I loved Avowed. It was my favorite game I played last year. It was so much fun, the writing was so good, and the characters were amazing. Even the smallest choices felt impactful. I would've played a sequel in a heartbeat. I'm so so sorry.

Put all my Steam games on a spinner wheel and picked one at random: Many Nights a Whisper is a lovely, contemplative game that's short to play but packs a punch. I didn't "win" and yet it felt right. Great writing, intriguing worldbuilding (just enough, not too much). I really liked it!

Hannah is an incredible writer who always looks to take on new challenges and build her skills up to support any game she’s on. There is nothing that daunts her or that she says “no a writer doesn’t do that” she’s a full team player. I hope someone grabs her quick. She’s incredible.

Shmoopy, emotional thread incoming. I learned after being laid off from Telltale Games (almost exactly 8 years ago) that dream jobs aren't real, at least not in gamedev. You can have dream projects, and dream people, but the job is always just a job.

Hey so, today is my last day at Crystal Dynamics apparently. I joined the company in 2018 to work on Marvel's Avengers and it's been the longest (and best) job I've ever had. It now means I'm looking for work, so if you know of any senior writer/narrative designer positions please send them my way.
