Anand is the best (and I'm doing an event with him at, yes, @cityartssf.bsky.social Thursday, for his new book Man in the Mirror). Couldn't agree more that cities are refuges or places of last resort for people kicked out of rural/suburban/pseudo-idyllic America.

very tired of being told it is the responsibility of urban democratic voters never to risk possibly maybe by chance seeming less than respectful of rural red state life and then watching thousands in nebraska cheer on the president joking about a nuclear strike on me and millions of my neighbors

I'm at the point where I'm ignoring tech guides written in the past year. They're uniformly slop. I'd rather read something slightly out of date than another "Here's the thing..."

this was almost 20 years ago. Many of the texts being scanned were quite old (80-200 years old), so needed to know the language and author to be able to figure out what was actually on the page.

Classics & Religious Studies degree here. I partnered with an early OCR effort because the programmers couldn't tell if things had scanned correctly. In the end, it was a lot faster to teach me some Python than to try and teach them some Attic Greek.

I can't help but wonder if an important difference between these yutzes & older groups is before the humanities and 'noblesse oblige' were social currency. They may have rolled their eyes at it, but they knew about it. Now? This is what STEM all the time gets you.

This shit has been going on for ages. I was in SF ~14 years ago and I overhead some of them talk about Burning Man, I remember thinking "They're all in a sex cult". Majored in Religious Studies and researched on cults/extremism.

Hi there, Website Launches is a public directory that tracks newly launched websites. We added (your website) after it was detected going live. When a site first launches, an initial public listing is created. Many site owners choose to claim their listing to confirm details and manage how their listing appears publicly.

There is a lot to say about the Nolan Odyssey movie. But one point that I think has not been emphasized enough is: this is a film about living in LA, as Nolan, my erstwhile British compatriot and age mate, has done for years. I gather it’s a strange place.

It's the dactylic hexameter. It's like a drumbeat that ebbs and flows like the Aegean. And when someone as skilled as Wilson recites it, you can feel why those stories survived 2700 years.

Waiting for people to find out that the funeral at the end of the Iliad isn't for Achilles.
A screenshot from reddit that says "TIL that the story of the Trojan Horse is not mentioned in the Iliad and is only briefly mentioned in the Odyssey. The account of the Fall of Troy that is known today was written by the Roman poet Virgil in 1st Century BC"

I've had to unfriend a few fans lately, all for the same reason. They made ridiculing, unkind, and in some cases outright cruel comments about pictures I posted of young women cosplaying Jessica.
More than a person, Jessica is a state of mind. To play Jessica, you need self -confidence, a sense of humor, and a Jessican -attitude-. There is no such thing as a Jessica cosplayer being too short, too flat chested, too heavy, too thin, too unattractive, too black, too Asian, or even too male!!! All Jessica, any Jessica, every Jessica is good Jessica.
I'm not giving any warnings or second chances. A single disparaging comment on a Jessica cosplayer, and I'm throwing you out of the rainbow colored Toontown Tent.
