The last Labour Government spent a lot of money not building light rail in Auckland and a lot of time not building Kiwibuild houses they announced. The Greens opened a fund and used it to subsidise expensive private schooling. If they're not thinking about that, they're not serious.

Is Labour's position that weird? Three years and six years and nine years ago, we didn't think we could get a CGT done. So, even though that would have been our preference, we did the weird deductability thing. This time we're doing CGT, so there's no need to do the interest thing for houses only.

Parties having actual bottom lines is useful information for voters. The Greens had one in 1999 and 2002: No GE. In 1999 that got a moratorium and a Royal Commission. In 2002 it kept them out of government, because Labour wouldn't agree. But when parties don't have one they should tell the truth.

This is a great question about Sheeran and Macklemore. It's clear from Macklemore's statement that Sheeren's own desire to appear "neutral" (not possible, but whatevs) played a role. But also, choices are often shaped by these sorts of in-the-weeds contractual minutiae.
