Over the next few years AI imagery will continue to infest previously safe spaces in more and more difficult-to-spot forms, but the glaringly obvious slop aesthetic is here to stay, because many people have taste so bad that it will make you question your deepest beliefs about what is good in life

A specific instance of several general phenomena. People underestimate how good AI is at image generation because the people who prefer to use AI over real artists have dogshit aesthetic taste

He's so forgotten and boring people can't even be bothered to gloat. I do hope it tortures him to be this irrelevant, and it gives me a bit of pleasure to imagine that's the case, but he's really just one in a long list of guys too stupid and evil to be an effective team player on the bad guys' team

I remember reading or hear from Alex Wellerstein that there wasn't really a conscious deliberate decision to use the bomb the way people talk about it now. They were already burning one city after another, killing 100s of thousands. They just switched from incendiary bombs to nukes

The replacement of Jesus with Trump as the messianic figure in right wing American Christianity is predicated on plausible deniability, and Trump breaks this contract every time he explicitly acknowledges that he has taken the place of Christ in their worship.

There's studies that dog owners, in general, are worse at reading dogs' facial expressions than non-dog-owners. People tell themselves that they're treating their dog like a member of the family but they're just treating their dog as an extension of themselves

Practically speaking I'm live-and-let-live w/r/t polyamory, but as I've grown older I've gotten a lot more skeptical and even suspicious of it. However, any time there's some flurry of anti-polyamory commentary in the discourse, it just sounds like "look at these gross deviant sluts" to me

I checked iNaturalist and this isn't the first escaped capybara in the UK. The climate would be quite agreeable to them. They've been known to escape from game ranches in Texas too. I wonder if we'll see a non-native population start up somewhere sometime

Israelite identity incorporated a number of groups that had been separate, like the 12(ish) tribes of Israel, and various smaller groups who get mentioned in passing in the historical books. At some point one or more of those groups probably lived in Egypt for a while

Austin’s Surge of New Housing Construction Drove Down Rents
After decades of explosive growth, Austin, Texas, in the 2010s was a victim of its own success. Lured by high-tech jobs and the city’s hip reputation, too many people were competing for too few homes....

Some people automatically go into this “Well, what’s the other side of the story?” pose. But the answer is that there is no other side. They’re 100% doing the things we accuse them of, and then lying, despite voluminous evidence.

The biggest risk in this moment is something sociologists call “symbolic compliance.” That’s when an institution that is violating civil rights gives the public just enough symbolic victories that accountability efforts lose steam before there has been any meaningful change.

I’m seeing posts from people (outside of MN) about how US citizens should carry their passports. And let me say that *inside* MN, we are calmly responding to requests with: “No, I don’t have to show you any documentation.” Because that’s how you protect everyone, regardless of immigration status.

"Sir! This is a warning!" the agent yelled as he punched the man's vehicle window. "Stop f—king following us! You are impeding operations! This is the United States federal government!"

"I live over here," the driver explained. "I got to get to my house."

"This is your warning!" the officer exclaimed.

"I serve the Lord; go to church," the resident replied.

"I will arrest you!" the officer threatened.

"Don't make a bad decision," another agent warned.

"I serve the Lord," the driver repeated. "Not a draft-dodging coward."

"Let these people go to church," the driver added. "Let these people serve the Lord and worship."

"You're not going to like the outcome of this, sir," the first officer said. "I guarantee that... Did you not learn from what just happened [when Renee Good was killed]?"

"Learn what?" the driver asked. "I serve the Lord, not a draft-dodging coward. I can't believe you'd take orders from a draft dodger."

That's very much my understanding as well. Left-wing non-monogamous people prefer to call what they do polyamory or ethical non-monogamy (ENM). But while I've known a number of self-identified poly people, I haven't met any openly self-identified swingers
