Advent calendars like this awaken my Irish Catholic grandmother in me: Advent is the season for waiting and preparing - counting down, yes - to Christmas. It’s not a time for gifts - that’s what the 12 Days of Christmas are about! Humph

I’m seeing a lot of posts about talking to your sons in light of the Cornell article. And yes. Talk to your sons. Here are some things you should say, based on anti-violence research about what they need to hear:

MPD still can’t answer questions about where all the money went. And now, Frey is directing them not to testify before the Council. What are they covering up? What don’t they want the public to know?

I had my first mani pedi in ages today. Close enough in experience to my favorite Park Slope spot and close enough in distance to my current home that I’m just going to say I have a new mani pedi spot. I haven’t messed up the mani yet - I’m impressed with myself.

This is helpful context as to why my beer choice at Leinie Lodge (yes, yes, not the current name) today felt right. I once exclaimed in wonder and excitement at seeing it in a Queens liquor store and the employee and my date cocked their head in confusion at enthusiasm for Mich Golden Light.

roasted eggplant with tomatoes and mint
Nothing says Last Day of Summer like eggplant bruschetta, except thick rounds of eggplant are the bread here and the topping is so much more exciting than just tomatoes.

I had a leftovers/rejects party the day after the submissions. I made a 4-in version of the cake so people could get a sense of the concept. Folks were great at boosting my confidence (re: ego) before reading the comment cards. I already know the judges and I fundamentally disagree about brownies.
Leftover blueberry muffins in a bowl, ginger scones on a platter, brownie bites (cut up edge pieces) in a footed dessert dish, brownies on a covered jadeite cake stand, chocolate chip almond cake tops on an appetizer plate, and a glimpse of the 4-in chocolate chip almond cake with its chocolate glaze on a small covered jadeite cake stand. All displayed on a wood buffet. The top of the 4-in chocolate chip almond cake with chocolate glaze displayed on a jadeite cake stand, the tackle stand cover to the side. The cake has been halfway cut up, with six small slices. A close up of the inside of the chocolate chip almond cake where you can see the chocolate buttercream filling.

Also submitted: ginger scones, brownies, chocolate chip cookies, and chocolate chip almond cake (with chocolate buttercream filling and a chocolate ganache-ish glaze). Looking forward to my comment card(s)! Only the top 25 get one, so if any of the others receive one, that also feels like placing.
The leftovers/rejects: blueberry muffins, chocolate chip cookies, and ginger scones are piled on a quarter sheet pan atop a sheet pan of brownies too poorly cut to submit.A chocolate chip almond cake with chocolate buttercream frosting and a chocolate ganache glaze on display in the Creative Activities building. About 1/3 of the cake has been cut out to taste and display the inside appearance. There’s a tag with my name on top of the cake.

Close up of my second place blueberry muffin in the case in the Creative Activities building. There’s a tag with my name, Minneapolis, and the contest class number 1025 with a red “2” flag in front. Me in front of the Creative Activities building on drop off day. I’m in a blue dress holding a dish bin full of pastry boxes filled with my submissions. This was taken after about 1.5 hours in line. There was another 30 min or so to go.

While I missed the fun of in-person voting today, the ease of being a permanent absentee voter is unmatched. My partner and I filled out our ballots weeks ago, and I could say to campaigns that called, “I’ve voted!” Plus, he ended up working out of town today and would have missed voting.

Favorite All Clads: 3qt with steamer basket and 6qt sauté pan. A 12in cast iron does so many things so very well. And this carbon steel pan converted my partner away from nonstick. Heat it until water beads bounce and it’s magic.

I have created my own set of All Clad D5 pans. They clean up easy with a soaking. I also have cast iron. I always had a single nonstick fry pan that I would replace as needed. Last fall I upgraded to a Mauviel carbon steel and it’s amazing.

Some sausage making info: the engine where all the people are is built to withstand a bomb, so they are relatively safe. You dont want to know how many vehicles they hit each year cos ppl play chicken and how many derailments there are. The real risk is the cargo

I have real concerns about how moderate Craig will vote in a seat held by progressives for almost two decades, but we should fear putting someone at the top of the ticket with demonstrated animosity towards other statewide candidates. Will she deliver votes to reelect our AG? Do her supporters care?

“How much is a magical world worth?” A beautiful thread about Cabo Verde, the Peace Corps, and the World Cup:
Jill Tucker
@jilltucker
X.com
If you ever doubt how magical this world is, one day you will decide to go to a World Cup watch party in Oakland that you found online to root for a country where you spent two years trying to coax English out of the mouths of Cape Verdean teenagers. 1/7
11:42 AM • 6/25/26 • 670K ViewsJill Tucker
@jilltucker
X.com
And at the watch party you will ask the organizer if he's from Cape Verde. He will say yes, from Praia. And you'll say oh! I lived there for two years. I was a teacher. And he will ask, "What's your name?" You will tell him and he will say,
"You were my teacher."
CABO VERDE
11:43 AM • 6/25/26 • 92K ViewsJill Tucker @jilltucker • 20h
And across 30+ years and 6,000 miles you will hug a now man who tried to find you and remembered the songs you taught him and his classmates and he will apologize for how badly behaved they all were. And you will laugh and try not to cry and gape in wonder at at this crazy world.

Jill Tucker
@jilltucker
X.com
You will remember how much you love the World Cup. And what the Peace Corps meant to you. What those students, 40 to a class with no glass on the windows, meant to you.
11:43 AM • 6/25/26 • 62K ViewsJill Tucker @jilltucker • 20h
Ivan, the grown man with a touch of grey in his beard, will tell you later he has struggled to describe what it meant to him to meet again - that he shared our photo with classmates.
And when he returns from watching the Cabo Verde game, we will try to find the words together.

Jill Tucker @jilltucker • 20h And then you read that the US
House of Representatives will vote a day before that game on an amendment to eliminate the Peace Corps, which costs 1/6 the price of the Tomahawk missiles the US used in the war on Iran.

Jill Tucker @jilltucker •20h And you wonder: How much is a magical world worth?

When working on R+J a few years ago, we three Millennial producers realized part of why we were unexpectedly caught up in Paris’ death was not just because of the actor we cast and his choices - it was that we kept forgetting Paris dies because Paul Rudd doesn’t in the film.
