Rural areas are being hit the hardest by the GP shortage. And let's be honest: Selwyn is right next to one of our biggest cities. Down in Southland things are even more dire.

In a leafy suburb had a ~24 hour wait for a regular GP appointment with my dr, same day for urgent AT MY GP. Now, it’s over a 10 day wait for one of the drs in the practise. Haven’t seen my GP since last year. That’s access to healthcare, reduced in real time.

Then there’s trying to find a GP at all. When I moved from Dunedin to Christchurch, I tried a series of clinics, radiating out further and further, then simply gave up. It was too depressing. Two years later a new clinic started nearby. I’m with them now. Lots more I could add.

Last time I got a doctor’s appointment the soonest time I could get was two weeks away. And that was an *improvement*. If you don’t have the luxury of waiting, what else are you supposed to do?

We've been having really positive conversations with both parties. Neither has yet proposed a policy that will reliably increase GP numbers, but we think they will get there soon.

Investment in primary health care is very richly rewarded by lower health costs and improved health outcomes. Not to mention the human misery that can be prevented with early diagnosis and treatment. More GPs and a higher Govt subsidy, allowing lower patient fees, is good policy on every level.

when I was a kid if we were sick enough my mum could call the GP first thing and often get an appointment the same day if she was on the ball enough. these days it takes me 3+ weeks to see someone, and it's never the same person.

Increasing the number of GPs is fiscally responsible, and it keeps our people healthy.

On the other hand, if we increase the number of GPs by just a few hundred so it's easier for people to get an appointment, the number of people turning up to ED or checking into hospital with unmanaged chronic illness will plummet. Healthier people, fewer costs.

If just 10% of people visiting a GP tomorrow ended up in hospital instead, every hospital bed in the country would be full and many more people would be going home untreated.

If you're talking about ED... you need to be talking about GP. We cannot fix ED and hospital overcrowding until we have enough GPs. Put the fence at the top of the cliff.

My partner's medical centre/ GP is closing. Patients can be transferred to a more expensive practice on the othe side of town or seek a new doctor. Even applying to enrol at a practice takes so much online documentation that some patients would fail out of the process. So many barriers!

Hipkins is so close here. It's not just the *cost* of seeing a GP. A huge factor clogging ED is that people literally cannot enrol with a GP, or can't get a timely appointment. We need more GPs, and we need them fast to save the health system #nzpol
Chris Hipkins saying our health system is clogged by people going to ED because they can't afford to go to a GP. Christopher Luxon not disputing that.

#NZpol “The report said every dollar invested returned $1.93 to the economy and $1.15 to the Crown.” I can’t help but think both that this needs a wider health context, and that you’d think similar benefits would be had for investing more widely in health, i.e. not just on medicines.

That's utter bollocks. GPs are on the front lines and see the effects EVERY DAY of under-funding of our health system and want Nat OUT. Both hospitals and GPs desperately need more money. BUT, funding GPs reduces overall health spending: prevention is cheaper than ill-care.

100%. Access to early screening, GP appts & support, where people live now, makes far more difference long term to outcomes than a fancy one-off private hospital in a singular location. ACTs foolishness is what happens when wealthy ppl seek control instead of listening to experts.
