Let's talk about ACT's proposed funding for GPs. Straight up, this is the first time a party has proposed a solution to the fundamental problem in the GP crisis: You can't recruit and retain enough GPs if the working conditions and remuneration aren't competitive. #nzpol 🧵

If you're talking about ED... you need to be talking about GP. We cannot fix ED and hospital overcrowding until we have enough GPs. Put the fence at the top of the cliff.

Hipkins is so close here. It's not just the *cost* of seeing a GP. A huge factor clogging ED is that people literally cannot enrol with a GP, or can't get a timely appointment. We need more GPs, and we need them fast to save the health system #nzpol

Chris Hipkins saying our health system is clogged by people going to ED because they can't afford to go to a GP. Christopher Luxon not disputing that.

• Fund the full scope of clinically essential GP work including non-patient facing activities that protect patient safety and system efficiency.
• Sustainably fund GP and rural hospital training programmes on par with other medical specialties.
• Strengthen retention through improved working conditions, professional recognition and career pathways.
• Invest in general practice as an equity intervention recognising its role in improving access and outcomes for Māori, Pacific Peoples, rural and other priority populations, including by reducing cost barriers and supporting affordable access to care.
