Why? Why don't they know? Whose responsibility is it to ensure they know, how are those mechanisms failing, and what can we do to repair or replace them? Those are the questions those who believe in journalism as public service should be asking ourselves. Because 48% is a failing grade.

Big deal—after correcting, it turns out that moderate candidates do not perform better than extreme candidates in general elections. Kudos to Andy, Dan, and Adam for updating a key question in political science
Andy Hall &
@ahall_research
In 2018, Dan Thompson and I published a paper in the APSR estimating large vote share and turnout effects for the nomination of more-extreme House candidates in the 2006--2014 period. Recently, Adam Bonica showed us an important imbalance in the data from our paper that makes us doubt our findings. We've written an update to the paper explaining this issue here:
andrewbeniaminhall.com/hall
_thompson_...
We have four main takeaways from this exercise:
(1) The evidence in our sample from 2006--2014 that more-extreme nominees cause large changes in a party's vote share or share of general-election turnout is far weaker than we previously thought, and should not be relied on.
(2) Because our sample of years does not provide a sufficiently large, stable effect on vote share, the design is unsuitable for understanding whether there is an underlying relationship

The "starving artist" myth is one promoted by people in power to romanticize the forced austerity of artists and writers -- meaning, to convince creators that being paid less than they are worth is simply part of the expected narrative when it shouldn't be. (See also: the WGA strike.)

A wild detail in my friend Susan Casey’s new article on the Titan submersible fiasco—a fight during an earlier dive that ended with Stockton Rush *throwing the submersible’s controls* in anger, which seems like a bad idea? www.vanityfair.com/news/2023/08/tit…
As chief pilot and the person responsible for operational safety, Lochridge had created a dive plan that included protocols for how to approach the wreck. Any entanglement hazard demands caution and vigilance: touching down at least 50 meters away and surveying the site before coming any closer. Rush disregarded these safety instructions. He landed too close, got tangled in the current, managed to wedge the sub beneath the Andrea Doria’s crumbling bow, and descended into a full-blown panic. Lochridge tried to take the helm, but Rush had refused to let him, melting down for over an hour until finally one of the clients shrieked, “Give him the fucking controller!” At which point Rush hurled the controller, a video-game joystick, at Lochridge’s head. Lochridge freed the sub in 15 minutes.
