It's an especial benchmark of hypocrisy that the US Conference of Catholic Bishops have repeatedly injected themselves into politics by criticizing Catholic Democrats who are pro-choice, but have never denied Communion to politicians that support execution (which the Church opposes.)

To bottom line this for you, the Supreme Court has allowed Trump to deport people without giving them a hearing, and said "we will consider next year whether this violated the laws against torture". They think it's worse to make Trump wait than risk him torturing people.
