My photo collage shows four Minoan clay vessels from Bronze Age Crete some 3,500 years ago. They are all painted with a creamy-yellow slip and decorated with black motifs.

Top left - a round clay flask with a short spout, and a small loop handle at either side of the spout. The flask is decorated with an octopus with eight writhing, sucker-lined arms covering the whole surface of the flask. It stares out at the viewer with wide, almost cartoon-like eyes. Additional motifs include sea urchins, tritons, small rocks and seaweed. Minoan decoration depicting sea motifs is known as ‘Marine Style’. It is 27 cm tall. From Palaikastro, 1500-1450 BC.

Top right - clay rhyton (pouring vessel) in the shape of a stylised bull’s head. The pale clay slip is painted with a black pattern, almost like a leopard print. Circular black eyes, black muzzle and black painted horns. There’s a pouring hole at the mouth. From Knossos Little Palace, 1450-1375 BC

Bottom left - the so-called ‘Nautilus vessel’ - a tall ceramic jar with a rounded body tapering to a pointed base, a short wide neck, and a single handle. It is decorated with sea motifs including a large nautilus with three curled, sucker-lined arms rising out of a shell, corals, and seaweed. From Phaistos Palace, 1500-1450 BC

Bottom right - Basket-shaped rhyton decorated with four bands of double -axes around the body of the vessel. It has a circular base and straight sides which taper inwards with a carry handle on either side There is a small pouring hole in one of the bottom corners. 19.8 cm tall. From Pseira, 1500-1450 BC

Technically one year late, but I booked my mom and myself a night at a castle. It's beautiful! We walked around earlier in the day to see the exterior and the gardens, then had afternoon tea. We are now hiding out in our room from the oppressive heat. 10/10 would recommend

For a timeline cleanse, here’s a shot of a whale tail today in the ocean off of Provincetown. That green tint in the water is caused by phytoplankton, tiny microscopic plants with chlorophyll that reflect green light onto the whale’s white underside. I hope you are having a great day!

I’ve been working on “The Lovers” when in the flat here in Cornwall. I think it’s done, but I’ll give it another look over when I get home. I planned this composition to maybe crop the painting into a large oval frame, but not so sure I want to now. Ravens, Glastonbury abbey, and may blossoms.
