About a year ago I dug into the story of James Shearer, a corporal in a field hospital in WWI who thought he'd invented a revolutionary new medical device. He hadn't. But ... things got a little out of hand. Finally wrote it up: www.generalist.org.uk/blog/2026/ja...

One of the things I know about writing is this: spend it all, shoot it, play it, lose it, all, right away, every time. Do not hoard what seems good for a later place in the book or for another book; give it, give it all, give it now. The impulse to save something good for a better place later is the signal to spend it now. Something more will arise for later, something better. These things fill from behind, from beneath, like well water. Similarly, the impulse to keep to yourself what you have learned is not only shameful, it is destructive. Anything you do not give freely and abundantly becomes lost to you. You open your safe and find ashes.

This concept is still occupying my brain, btw. Over lunch I have concluded: a) he's an assassin who uses a thin high-tensile wire retractable skipping rope as combined nunchucks/garotte/bolas b) I want Blumineck to play him in the surely inevitable hit TV show.

We live in capitalism. Its power seems inescapable. So did the divine right of kings. Any human power can be resisted and changed by human beings. Resistance and change often begin in art, and very often in our art, the art of words.

Dolly Parton passed. I was a fan of her music, but also a fan of her as a person. Particularly her kindness. And her work on literacy. And her stance on vaccination. And animal rights. And... She used her powers for good. She wasn't perfect, but she damn sure tried to be. RIP, Dolly.

Some former colleagues of mine did this, and then discovered they had forgotten to enquire about the seal's holiday plans.
When the elephant seal was tagged on Signy Island, it was hoped that this animal would range deeply into the ice-covered Weddell Sea in winter, thereby providing data from a region inaccessible to ships and from which very few hydrographic measurements have been collected. Unfortunately, the specific elephant seal that was tagged (Fig. 2) was not quite the enthusiastic adventurer that we had hoped for, choosing instead to spend the following months very close to the South Orkneys, and venturing only briefly beyond the shelf slope adjacent to these islands. This behaviour seems toA very fat and happy seal with a transmitter on its head, "not the intrepid adventurer that we had hoped for"

Rewilded land remains green amid drought-stricken English countryside, images show
National Trust’s Holnicote estate says restored wetlands and rivers offer proof of resilience to drought, wildfires and flooding Aerial footage of an estate in Somerset has revealed the benefits of rewilding land in the face of extreme weather brought about by the climate crisis. The area of the National Trust’s Holnicote estate where rivers have been returned to their natural courses and wetlands have been restored have remained green and lush during the five heatwaves across the summer. In contrast, the surrounding countryside has become parched and brown. Continue reading...

In the Renaissance people theorized, since the Aeneid is great, if you wrote poems made only of words & phrases from the Aeneid rearranged they should be great too, since a great source regurgitated should yield greatness. They produced NOTHING we still read. Thinking about that a lot lately.
