MLK defied U.S. State Department pressures. U.S. military authorities had confiscated his passport to discourage the crossing, but he used his American Express credit card as identification to pass through Checkpoint Charlie. He went on to speak to packed, overflowing churches in East Berlin. /8

MLK preaches in the overcrowded St. Mary’s Church in East Berlin, Sept. 13, 1964. The core text of MLK’s sermon did not significantly change between West and East Berlin. However, the two events felt worlds apart. In East Berlin, MLK began by conveying “Christian greetings from your brothers and sisters in West Berlin.” In an artificially severed city, this simple message caused members of the East German congregation to openly sob. MLK also personalized his introduction by leaning into his namesake. He told them: “I come to you not altogether as a stranger, for the name that I happen to have is a name so familiar to you, so familiar to Germany.” This instantly endeared him to a community in spiritual isolation. The sermon also took on a different weight when delivered behind the Iron Curtain.
