Really perfect economic combo where interest rates are increasing fast enough that homeowners are facing declining home values *and* homebuyers are facing increasing monthly payments. Just pure pain for everyone involved in buying or selling a home right now.

An amazingly stark example of how the US economy has broken: Zaslav clears nearly a *billion* dollars amid a CEO tenure where he made basically anything he touched worse, harmed multiple prestigious brands, led huge layoffs—but delivered a corrupt merger for shareholders. variety.com/2026/tv/news...

This afternoon in Marble Hill, a New Yorker was shot by an ICE agent in a residential neighborhood. Early reports indicate agents surrounded him and a 5-year-old child in his car before firing multiple rounds. We believe the child was physically unharmed.

This is an unconscionable and incredibly serious situation. I have called the President; when we speak I will demand that he ends all ICE enforcement actions in our city. I will not stand by while ICE agents terrorize our communities.

Our thoughts are with the injured New Yorker and his family tonight. We are praying for his recovery.

Get ICE out of our neighborhoods. Get ICE out of our hospitals. Get ICE off our streets. Get ICE away from our children.

Abolish ICE.

Whoa. @haleaziz.bsky.social has the scoop on a truly insane plan to use some military training ships for deportations, with people presumably shackled or locked in cells for days at a time as they transit to Central and South America. Each journey would be staggeringly expensive — and dangerous.

It's telling that men would rather try to invent tech to replace humans' role in caregiving than step up as equal partners in parenting. Telling, that is, in that it shows how financial capitalism and patriarchy work together to dissuade men from doing "unprofitable" labor, like the work of care.

Even putting aside what this demands of Jews, it is the opposite of doing good politics. I have personally pushed Jewish members of my family away from pro-Israel and Zionist stances by persuasion, learning, and example. If I had just cut them off, they would have worse politics today.

We would all have better conversations about Zionism if we viewed it as a nationalism like all others, akin to diaspora Serbian nationalism from Canadian Serbs. Not a civil rights or social justice cause, but also not a way Jewish people are abnormal or ontologically evil.

Of course Trump is worse. That in no way excuses Biden's failures. It's going to be worth reckoning with those failures more as the primary heats up because if the next dem admin brings in Biden's hacks like McGurk, Sullivan and Blinken they will fail again in the same ways.

In Gaza, the humanitarian access barriers were almost entirely due to the IDF acting with our support, and Biden tried to navigate around this reality with absurd ideas like the floating pier rather than confronting the reality of the harms being caused by our full support of the IDF.

Failure foretold
From the beginning, almost no one in the humanitarian sector thought the US plan to deliver aid to Gaza via a temporary pier was workable or that it would make a meaningful difference to the amount of assistance reaching people. “It was only the people who didn’t know humanitarian logistics who thought it would,” Konyndyk said.

Still, “if you're an NGO or an agency that depends heavily on the US government for your funding, that is a very, very hard thing to come out against publicly,” he added.

With the pier’s last days in sight – or maybe already past – the staggering humanitarian suffering in Gaza is only mounting, and the aid response is in disarray.

Due to the Israeli military’s ground offensive in Rafah, the amount of aid entering the enclave is even less now than the already insufficient amounts being allowed in when Biden first announced the project at the beginning of March.

For Konyndyk, the fact that it was clear from the beginning that the pier was not a solution to the issues preventing a meaningful aid response from taking shape in Gaza “shows you how disconnected the policymaking on this was from any kind of humanitarian expertise”.

“This was,” he added, “clearly a political decision.”

People who actually worked for USAID, like myself, care about humanitarian outcomes, believe it or not. I didn't work on Gaza but I did on Syria and while the US was far from perfect there we generally did good work on advocating for increased humanitarian access being denied by Assad and Putin.
