the fundamental thing wrong with this ai-driven "hyper personalization" pipe dream is that your preferences are constantly changing, primarily in response to experiencing things that are different from your current preferences and expectations, through this little-known process called Living.

Look at these gains. Raises. AI protection. LFG.
Unionized Inquirer employees will receive a one-time $5,577 payment before taxes within 30 days of ratifying the contract. They will get a 4% wage increase and a $1,000 bonus in the second year, and another raise in year three.
The amount of that last pay bump varies between 2.25% and 4%, with lower-paid members getting the higher rates.
“This is our third consecutive contract with pay raises at The Inquirer, following a decade of layoffs and furloughs,” said Guild president Marin. “These are meaningful raises too.”
Vacation time will also accrue more quickly, with new Guild employees starting with three weeks per year.Healthcare costs have been on the rise for many Americans, and under the Inquirer’s new union contract, members will see their weekly rates increase for the first time in 20 years, according to the union. Despite the increase, the union says it worked to keep rates low. Guild members’ contributions to their health plans will increase by $7.50 to $12.50 per week in year two of the contract.Under the new deal, The Inquirer may not use any AI generated videos or images that appear realistic “for editorial purposes.” The contract bars The Inquirer from using AI to mimic employees without their explicit consent.
Employees also have the right to have their byline removed from any content that is AI generated.

Under the contract, Guild members must be included in developing, training, and maintaining AI tools. Union employees must be involved in creating or otherwise verifying any AI-generated content.

The Inquirer will also put together an AI Advisory Committee in collaboration with the union, which will meet on a monthly basis. The group is expected to discuss “the implementation of AI-generated and AI-assisted editorial content, the implementation of AI tools for internal company purposes, and updates to the Employer’s AI usage policies.”

🍳 A messy comic of a scene from O Brother Where Art Thou. Delmar and Everett are in a movie theater looking behind them in their seats. Delmar is saying " We thought you was a Toad" to a confused looking Pete (surrounded by question marks).

Emi Sakura's post about PAC is breaking my heart
The first time I spoke with him was in Ireland in 2018. When you're living in an English-speaking country, Japanese suddenly reaches your ears in a startling way. Our conversations always started with his "Otsukaresamade-su." Backstage, I wouldn't sense his presence at all, but then those words would arrive right by my ear like the wind. And so I'd search for him. There's no English phrase that translates it just right—its meaning encompasses hello, long time no see, glad to see you, good work, goodbye, good night, see you later, and all sorts of other things rolled into one. I think it's the kind of greeting that comes from the way he's confronted pro wrestling in Japan. It's time. As always, I grab my bag and climb into the car. I can't believe the show goes on. Today and from here on out, forever, I know I'll keep straining to listen. Thank you, PAC.

We never imagined how far that dream would travel, into homes, into hearts, into the way generations imagined what we could still become. In a world that often feels as divided as ever, maybe that's exactly why we need it now: a reminder that unity was always the point.

Something to bear in mind as things get harder, from a 2009 Metafilter post from someone who lives through Sarajevo.
Metafilter post from Dee Extrovert part 1: Well, unlike the majority of you (l assume), 1 actually lived several years in a period of savagery and killing, during which nothing - food, water, electricity, phone, clothing, sense of safety, school, the ability to go out in public, etc - was available, except during totally unpredictable, brief and sporadic occasions.
Of those who couldn't leave my city, Sarajevo:
Some people (very few) were prepared for what they thought would be the "long haul" - this tended to be a couple of months. These people were widely seen as lunatics and dangerously pessimistic ones at that.
Most people were not at all prepared. This included my family. Many of those - like my family - considered the idea of "preparation" to be an affront to the decency we felt most people possessed. Were we wrong? Well, I don't know. We suffered greatly; my parents were killed. But speaking only for myself, I never felt I cheapened my soul by betting on calamity.
Today, that still feels like it's worth something.Metafilter post from Dee Extrovert part 2: But here's the main point: "Preparing" for the disaster really didn't do anyone much good. Those who
"prepared" ate a little better for a while. They stayed warmer for a few extra days. They enjoyed the radio for a while longer (via batteries.) But in the end, they ended up hungry, cold and bored too, just like the rest of us. Guns and weapons helped no one directly and were even of little to no use in the defense of Sarajevo, since they were toys compared to the shells, bombs and high-powered armaments of the attacking forces.
The worst parts of war were psychological - the fear, anxiety, boredom, loneliness, paranoia, bad dreams.
Respite from those things came with sharing food with a neighbor, finding a piece of clothing that would fit someone you knew, commiserating with others in your position, figuring out how to make make-up from brick or french fries from wheat paste and spreading this newly-acquired war knowledge around the mahala.
We knew who had extra food and supplies. For the most part, they weren't attacked or hassled or bothered. Contrary to what these survivalists say, those in dire times generally hold on to their personal sense of pride even more than they do in normal times. I'd take a bite of a friend's salad without bothering to ask in normal times. I'd never have done that in wartime, no matter how hungry I was.Metafilter post from Dee Xtrovert: Well, unlike the majority of you (l assume), 1 actually lived several years in a period of savagery and killing, during which nothing - food, water, electricity, phone, clothing, sense of safety, school, the ability to go out in public, etc - was available, except during totally unpredictable, brief and sporadic occasions.

This concept was introduced to me as "run the dishwasher twice" and was an important part of my executive functioning recovery as well as my path to self-acceptance.
When I was at one of my lowest (mental) points in life, I couldn't get out of bed some days. I had no energy or motivation and was barely getting by.

I had therapy once per week, and on this particular week I didn't have much to 'bring' to the session. He asked how my week was and I really had nothing to say.

'What are you struggling with?' he asked.

I gestured around me and said 'I dunno man. Life.'

Not satisfied with my answer, he said 'No, what exactly are you worried about right now? What feels overwhelming? When you go home after this session, what issue will be staring at you?'

I knew the answer, but it was so ridiculous that I didn't want to say it. I wanted to have something more substantial.
Something more profound.

But I didn't.

So I told him, 'Honestly? The dishes. It's stupid, I know, but the more I look at them the more I CAN'T do them because I'll have to scrub them before I put them in the dishwasher, because the dishwasher sucks, and I just can't stand and scrub the dishes.'

I felt like an idiot even saying it.

What kind of grown ass woman is undone by a stack of dishes? There are people out there with *actual* problems, and I'm whining to my therapist about dishes?

But he nodded in understanding and then said:

'RUN THE DISHWASHER TWICE.'I began to tell him that you're not supposed to, but he stopped me.

'Why the hell aren't you supposed to? If you don't want to scrub the dishes and your dishwasher sucks, run it twice. Run it three times, who cares?! Rules do not exist.'

It blew my mind in a way that I don't think I can properly express.

That day, I went home and tossed my smelly dishes haphazardly into the dishwasher and ran it three times.

I felt like I had conquered a dragon.

The next day, I took a shower lying down.

A few days later. I folded my laundry and put them wherever the fuck they fit.

There were no longer arbitrary rules I had to follow, and it gave me the freedom to make accomplishments again.

Now that I'm in a healthier place, I rinse off my dishes and put them in the dishwasher properly. I shower standing up. I sort my laundry.

But at a time when living was a struggle instead of a blessing, I learned an incredibly important lesson:

THERE ARE NO RULES. RUN THE DISHWASHER TWICE!!!"
