"Rendering the familiar unfamiliar." Great stuff from @johnschofyork.bsky.social in the latest @currentarchaeology.bsky.social "Contemporary archaeology gives us the tools to interrogate the material traces of our own lives...reminding us that the present is already becoming the past"

Unearthing the present: Why archaeologists should study the contemporary world
‘There’s no time like the present’, as the adage goes – and those who specialise in Contemporary Archaeology certainly agree. John Schofield explores how applying archaeological techniques to the material remains of our own times can illuminate current issues, as well as improving our understanding of the past.

Now that's what I'd call an inspiring keynote!🏺 In his "Wicked Perspectives on #Heritage Futures" keynote at the #ArchäologieImDialog conference in Lucerne, @johnschofyork.bsky.social made a fantastic point what #archaeology really is (or should be) about: humility, community, belonging. People.
Photo of a conference stage. The large screen shows the title page of a presentation called "Archaeology in Dialogue, But with Whom, and Why? Some Wicked Perspectives on Heritage Futures" by Professor John Schofield with Schofield standing next to it at a podium. In the upper part of the photo the backs of the heads of part of the audience can be seen.

Ecuador occupied and claimed the Galápagos Islands #OnThisDay in AD 1832. The islands are known for their unique wildlife, now under threat from plastic pollution. Applying archaeological techniques to waste that washed up is mitigating the threat. (£) doi.org/10.15184/aqy... 🏺 #Archaeology
