And ruins, in the shadow, of the mausoleum... Ferns & moss slowly cover the shell of the Cottage. It sits in rarely visited edgeland, haunt of graffitists. Woodland slowly swallows walls, its collapsing roof shivers to the elements. Adjacent the larger vaulted mausoleum casts its long shadow.

This winged beast has stood sentinel for a thousand years, on a most remarkable structure. It sits on the edge of the entrance to the 106 ft high round tower at Brechin Cathedral. It is only one of two in Scotland & relates to the tower tradition in Ireland. #Scotland #Heritage #Archaeology

Nether Largie South is a Clyde type chambered cairn, dating from c 3700 BC The view from the chamber shows later blocking slabs. A key monument in the 'linear cemtery' it's a wonderful site to spend some quiet time at. #Kilmartin #archaeology #scotland #TombTuesday @archscot.bsky.social

And with care, we remember ... Sweet Heart Abbey founded in 1273 by Lady Dervorgilla of Galloway, in memory of her husband John Balliol. 800 years later it's now covered in scaffolding to make repairs due to erosion from climate change. #scotland #heritage

And how, shall we now, mark what matters ... Learable Hill, Caithness, is part of a larger monument group, including stone row and cairn. On one face, a simple cross has since been incised, over 2000 years after the stone was first erected. #StandingStoneSunday #Archaeology #Scotland

Rows & Relationships ‐ part of the Alignement De Kermario, Carnac, the larger stone being strongly anthropomorphic. The group seems to have a deliberate rythmn or narrative that may have been legible in the past. #StandingStoneSunday

There is something particularly special about stones placed on top of monuments, like at Tumulus de Kercado. I also love the contrast with the funnel shaped water tower which overlooks the monument. #StandingStoneSunday #Archaeology

Mayburgh Henge A solitary survivor of what is thought to have been four standing stones in the interior of this remarkable monument. It's massive enclosing bank was probably largely taken from the near by river ‐ 'Neolithic' terraforming of the wider landscape. #StandingStoneSunday #Archaeology 🏺

Lunar alignments
