For those in Scotland, this excellent exhibition will be opening at Dalkeith Palace. It's a celebration of 200 years of the Royal Scottish Academy and photography - and I'll be showing one of my collodion works from the Isle of Skye. @royalscottishacad.bsky.social

Genuinely crushed this morning to read about the death of John Douglas of the Trashcan Sinatras. His songs soundtracked my and countless others lives for decades, and he managed to do the impossible - make me proud to come from Irvine. Thoughts with his family and friends.

Shooting interests & the rightwing press want to exploit the wildfires to reinstate moorland burning. But you don't fight fire with fire. You fight it with water. This wildfire in Wales' Elan Valley in May stopped abruptly when it reached re-wetted peat bogs: www.walesfarmer.co.uk/news/2614875...

UK writers - have any of you signed up for the ACLS - AI Training License? My publisher has, and I'm unsure what to do. I loathe AI in general and what it's doing to the arts, but wondered what others think about such licenses.

@outdoorscots.bsky.social I've just read your review of Upland - and agree about the final third of the book. I felt it ended pretty abruptly, and would have happily read a few more chapters. He did a great job of distilling quite complex topics from geology to land management though.

I enjoyed Upland by Ed Douglas. While it doesn't really offer anything new to mountain histories, it's a pleasant way to spend a few hours. He does however get bonus points for attacking colonialism and hubris in our high places where he finds it. www.theguardian.com/books/2026/j...

And we left our beds in the dark And we drove a cart to the hill And we buried the jar of ale in the bog And our small blades glittered in the dayspring And we tore dark squares, thick pages From the Book of Fire… —George Mackay Brown, “Peat Cutting” from Selected Poems: 1954–1992 #poem #poetry
George Mackay Brown
Peat Cutting

And we left our beds in the dark
And we drove a cart to the hill
And we buried the jar of ale in the bog
And our small blades glittered in the dayspring
And we tore dark squares, thick pages
From the Book of Fire
And we spread them wet on the heather
And horseflies, poisonous hooks,
Stuck in our arms
And we laid off our coats
And our blades sank deep into water
And the lord of the bog, the kestrel
Paced round the sun
And at noon we leaned on our tuskars
– The cold unburied jar
Touched, like a girl, a circle of burning mouths
And the boy found a wild bees’ comb
And his mouth was a sudden brightness
And the kestrel fell
And a lark flashed a needle across the west
And we spread a thousand peats
Between one summer star
And the black chaos of fire at the earth’s centre.

I just want to state that although I am writing about swimming in a Scottish Loch it's not a nature cure narrative (the horror) because I didn't go to Oxbridge. It was just 'pure chanking' as we say in Ayrshire.

Today is another reminder of why Universities just aren't suited for people with ADHD. The unrelenting bureaucracy is absolutely crippling when you just want to put pen to paper. It would also help if online forms weren't designed by the most misanthropic members of society.

I often ironically think of this Wilde quote which possibly anticipates the genre of Nature writing, and the somewhat endless quotations some authors are prone to using: "Most people are other people. Their thoughts are someone else's opinions, their lives a mimicry, their passions a quotation."
