Have you ever tried to read a scientific journal article and been told “you don’t have access, pay to download this article?” Did you know that the author of that article gets $0 if you pay? Instead, you can email the author and ask for a free copy! I’d be delighted to help and answer questions!

The Dallas Zoo & Fort Worth Zoo, both wonderful programs, are working with Texas Parks & Wildlife to restore wild populations of Texas horned lizards (Phrynosoma cornutum) via zoo breed & release programs. 2026 is already a RECORD year: > 1000 lizards released, with documented wild-born babies.
A gloved human hand holds a round plastic container like you might put a salad in, but there are teeny-tiny horned lizards all alert looking and fierce inside.

"Aaand off they go!
Yesterday, 116 Texas horned lizards started their exciting journey to be released into the wild. Our team has worked tirelessly since their hatching to ensure these little ones are fully prepped and ready for this big moment. Stay tuned for more details on their release!
Our Texas horned lizard conservation program is a collaborative effort with Texas Parks and Wildlife, Rolling Plains Quail Research Foundation, and several of our dedicated zoo partners."An adult horned toad sitting in sandy dirt in West Texas, with a mix of native shrubs and non-native grasses in the background. They're well camouflaged against the red-brown dirt, covered in spikes and watch the camera warily.

a extremely hand-drawn graphic of genetic bottleneck effects. Our original population, all of which are strange cow-horse blobs with frowny faces, are hanging out in a field. two have a pink dot (to indicate pink fur) and six have blue (for blue fur). next, a volcano that looks exactly like every cartoon volcano you've ever seen erupts. Our surviving population is just six horse-cows, now looking even sadder. by chance, 5 are pink and one is blue. After time passes, our population rebounds to 11 individuals, but now all are pink- despite the original population being mostly blue. again, the whole thing is in color pencil that was scanned in with low saturation, and i love it for its overwhelmingly human-made quality

Ed was in a fucked up position. He knew it. His typical apolitical stance was being challenged in a way it never had been before. He told me that the words
"Free Palestine" and the image of the Palestinian flag were hurtful to a lot of people he spoke with. I told him that if those words were more offensive than tens of thousands of Palestinian children being killed by Israel, then there was a fundamental disconnect between where those people stood and where I stood. But he couldn't get past his public facing, "I don't take sides."

it’s #ToothyTuesday! some of my fav teeth are colugo lower incisors. these teeth are pectinate or “fan-like,” exhibiting many long, thin projections used for grooming! while colugos are sometimes called flying lemurs, they’re not actual lemurs: lemurs = primates, and colugos = dermopterans!
This image depicts the anterior, or front part, of the mandible, or lower jaw, of the colugo. The three incisors on each side of the jaw - especially the middle two teeth on each side of the jaw - are pectinate, or “fan-like” in form, with tooth crowns exhibiting many long, thin projections that colugos use for grooming. absolutely a tactic. theorist media is doing the same thing to its workers, who also have a supermajority. from a piece I published last week: aftermath.site/game-theoris...
Newfound leverage comes at an opportune time, because the Theorist Media Union’s other path to recognition goes through the National Labor Relations Board, an entity that’s not exactly in great shape to expeditiously uplift a nascent union right now—or do much of anything else, for that matter. Trump has spent much of his second term denying the NLRB the quorum it relies on to make major decisions, which led to a “historic” backlog of cases. Now, even with the quorum restored and another (Republican, of course) nominee on the way, the NLRB continues to move in slow motion.
"In an ideal world, [Theorist Media and Lunar X] would voluntarily recognize us, even with the best NLRB,” said a Theorist Media worker. “In a less-than-ideal but better-than-now world, after they rejected us, we would have a much easier time attempting to take an election with the NLRB. But I have personally been following what appointments are happening there, and ... the more recent appointees are less worker friendly."

For Aftermath's Hater Week, I wrote about how Google's conversational AI search results aren't just annoying, but are an offense to everything I hold dear about the process of information searching in the first place
But the same way it drives me crazy when Stripe’s AI customer service tells me it’s so sorry, omg that must be so hard to hear about whatever utterly mundane, thoroughly unemotional issue I’ve brought it that day, Google search’s hollow facsimile of the human desire to help lays bare how badly its inventors misunderstand what regular people want and how we feel when we’re searching for information. (Full disclosure: I wrote my library school Master’s thesis literally about this, so it really riles me up!) It exposes how Google sees its users: helpless and intellectually lazy, longing for machines to solve our problems for us, unable to sit in the sometimes uneasy space of unknowing that motivates information searching in the first place. Shortcutting yourself out of this space–or, worse, letting AI do it for you–robs you of the chance to explore and discover, to let your search take you to new places and learn new things.
