Porteous' rockfish was a shallow-water fish related to the rockfishes commonly found along the Pacific Coast today. Near-complete skeletons of 𝘚𝘦𝘣𝘢𝘴𝘵𝘰𝘥𝘦𝘴 𝘱𝘰𝘳𝘵𝘦𝘰𝘶𝘴𝘪 can reveal important details about the extinct fish, such as numbers of vertebrae, scale patterns, and fin shapes.
