I get to sit in on rehearsal for this today and I’m very excited (apparently they got permission from The Decemberists to use their music for like a movement piece where all the kids play their D&D characters????) all my pop culture references are so 2018 though, I gotta let them change some shit

Here's yet another way that men sabotage women's careers: enable networking events that are threatening, abusive, potentially catastrophically violent for women, and so women leave early. How convenient for men. Remember this when you compare career trajectories.

I have been a guest at conventions where, during the pre-con walk through, my handler has pointed out the bar and mentioned how some guests are "more fun" and "get asked back," then names only men. Because a lot of female guests aren't comfortable hanging out around alcohol with strangers.

Cover reveal! The keywords I sent the press were “historical,” “natural,” and “multimedia” and I’d say they nailed it. Featuring my (book’s) main man Humphry Repton on the left there. Coming from Yale University Press this fall.
Image of a book cover with the title The Book of Improvement, subtitle Media Landscapes in the Global Enlightenment, and author Rachael King. The cover features a tree in the center with two men with surveying equipment to the left of the trunk and two men reclining under an umbrella to the right of the trunk. There are a river and rolling hills in the background.

Exactly this. And in fact, many models *have* been created this way, and decades of prior machine learning systems *were* created this way, consensually. These things are choices! People are STILL working this way! It’s not just that a better world is possible — it already EXISTS. We can nurture it.

I don’t think teaching a canon is bad, and studying intellectual traditions as historical phenomena is important to understanding culture, past and present. What’s bad is teaching a specific canon as if it’s above history and somehow universal. The frame matters, as does what’s available beyond it.

It’s a whole 3 panel track — and I’m guessing ReedPop is supportive given it adds $200-700 to the attendees’ registration

I’m familiar with the educator/librarian track — what’s striking to me is that lawyers can get pro passes by this route (admittedly costly but is then in theory paid out via professional dev funds). As far as I know there isn’t a comparable accredited continuing ed option for other professions.

I’m still navigating the “industry” and “enthusiast” distinctions — and they places they overlap or blur. A lot of the fields I study are in the early days of professionalization. Which combines folks with expectations from the (different) fields they were trained in & folks without any baseline.

I’m fascinated precisely because I can see compelling argument (these look like solid, certified coverage of relevant topics in the field) and also I can see ways in which this could be very poorly emulated.

I’m *fascinated* by this, because I have spent the last decade wondering what panels are/can be FOR. NYCC provides 3 panels that have been certified for continuing legal education. If you exclude the value of the included Pro Badge, it’s $100/hr — on the high end of CLE costs but not extortionate.

I would say a lot of that is about front-loading expectations about table culture. You can’t know everyone’s hearts, but you can (and should) insist on behavior that aligns with what you value in terms of respect for people.
