I've heard people make claims that AI would lead to a new Renaissance, but I didn't imagine it'd happen like this:
Screenshot of a Tweet from Pope Leo XIV. It reads:

"In this era of artificial intelligence, it is becoming urgen to distinguish human art from what machines produce. There is an ontological difference, even before an aesthetic one, between art and what a machine can generate through statistical calculation based on millions of images created by others. Algorithms lack the spark of humanity. For this reason, the Church wishes to renew an alliance with artists and cultural institutions to safeguard our humanity."

The formatting of this Beckett quote does still represent resilience and determination, just of a very different sort.
A neon light art piece of Samuel Beckett's famous quote "I can't go on. I'll go on" but spaced - it would seem inadvertently- so that it reads "I can't goon. I'll goon".

The takeaway is that in an adult’s lifetime, the time it took for information to move across space shrank dramatically, which was a phenomenon people noticed and addressed. NY and CA felt closer together, etc. But mostly I just enjoy watching them fidget, forced to sit still for FOUR WHOLE MINUTES.

I make the students close their laptops and watch as their letter creeps across the map. The first one takes FOUR MINUTES and is excruciating for them. And then the next one (post Panama-Pacific Railway) takes 2.5 mins. Then the overland route takes 30 seconds. Then an instant telegram.

In my history of tech class, we’re learning about the “speed-up” of communications during industrialization. I made an animation where we pretend to send letters from NY to CA at different years in the 1840s-70s. Each second that passes in the animation is one day of real time.

They left for St Louis on June 14, 1897. Bear in mind there were no roads like now; the Model-T was a decade in the future. This was a grueling cross country ride with a plan to follow railroad tracks. In Nebraska they had to “walk through 185 miles of sand, pushing their bicycles before them.”

A four-panel comic titled "yellow-rumped warbler poem". In panel 1, a yellow-rumped warbler stands on a branch in a late autumn scene, and says "Fall is here." In panel 2, the warbler watches a brown leaf fall to the ground, and says "Winter's near." In panel 3, the warbler faces the viewer as brown leaves fall, and says "Need some cheer?" In panel 4, the warbler is showing its luminous yellow rump, and cheerfully says "See my rear."
