A return to the pre-Trump federal research funding infrastructure would not be a good thing for the humanities. Better than what we have now, but still woefully inadequate to the scale of humanities research needed to address major social problems from AI to global warming. $1 billion NEH!!

Democrats defend "science," but what they really should be defending is "wissenschaft." No major social problems - from global warming to AI - can be solved without non-commercial research across multiple fields, including the social sciences and humanities. Really wish the party understood this.

Aside from toeing the party line, these senators really hate Jack Smith because they're viscerally opposed to the idea of prosecuting politicians. They are committed to their own elite impunity above and beyond whatever they think of Trump. Thus their obsession with the phone records non-issue.

In the 1860s, chess player Howard Staunton produced a photo-facsimile of Shakespeare's First Folio. It was one of the earliest attempts to use new technology to reproduce an old book. @folger.edu has Staunton’s proof sheets. I looked at them last week. If you like media/books/history, they're fun.

She's much likelier to win Senate, but also not running for president pulls the field to the left more than running would. Running means she has the leftmost lane locked up and everyone else is competing over the rest. Not running means those votes are up for grabs, they're worth trying to get.

My favourite line of literary criticism comes from Empson, who wrote: "You must rely on the individual poem to show you how it is trying to be good." I use it with my students, & have also found it to be a useful piece of life advice, if you extrapolate it to a moment, or a situation, or a day.
