Next generation in parasitology 2026: Connecting young parasitologists across Europe
The second edition of the ParaFrap-funded Next Generation in Parasitology workshop took place in Montpellier, France, from May 18 to 21, 2026. The meeting brought together 16 junior European group leaders working on diverse parasitic organisms, including Cryptosporidium, Leishmania, Plasmodium, Toxoplasma, Trypanosoma brucei, and Trypanosoma cruzi. The workshop combined a day-and-a-half-scientific symposium with a two-day retreat dedicated to early-career challenges. Discussions covered a variety of topics, including management, collaborations, funding opportunities in both academia and industry, as well as grant writing and peer review.

Meet Toxoplasma gondii — a sneaky little parasite that lives in cat litter & causes toxoplasmosis infection. For most people it's a non-event, but during pregnancy? It can seriously harm the fetus. Wash your hands after every litter box change. If you are pregnant, do not eat undercooked meat.

Today marks 30 years since we identified the apicoplast, a relict plastid in human and animal parasites (PMID 8632819). Apicoplasts are the target of the widely used antimalarial prophylactic doxycycline, which has saved many thousands of malaria infections.
