Ocean and AMOC observations are as important as weather observations and should be sustainable supported as weather observations. This requires policymakers and countries to come together and work together

Fortunately, it has become clear this is untenable. Unfortunately it required having a burnout to make it clear. Through the work of many the situation in the Netherlands may now change, but funding across the board is very fragile. Our US colleagues are in a most uncertain situation right now

You get creative. You reuse the mooring cables for six years. You work with instruments that are 25 years old and weed out the worst ones and calibrate the hell out of the rest. You take on the job of three people. You get yourself invited to conferences to so you can pay for instrument batteries

The competitive science call judge heavily on frontier science and innovation, so you have to recast the research in a new mold each time. Budgets are small and fixed. I can fit max 2 yrs observations in a 5 year project. Money for renewal of instruments doesn’t fit. Money for support doesn’t fit.

For those outside science thinking “scientists are always complaining about money, how bad can it be…” I maintain five moorings that are part of an AMOC array between Canada, Greenland and the EU since 2014. The competitive science funding in the Netherlands is particularly unsuited to do this
