Read first chapter of Exordia by Seth Dickinson and can’t stop thinking about it. The frenetic writing, which is the character voice; the tangling, tumbling thoughts that are both artful exposition and insight into how MC is—or perhaps is not—processing the past. The moment of dread! Smoothed over!

Marcel Duchamp kicked the bucket 55 slutty, slutty years ago and you can't get him out of your head.
You're half as old as he is dead and you are worshiping at his altar, you are drinking his piss. He won.

I think he/she is an only child - quite unusual for this mum and dad. Blending in with dad in the second pic. Again, photos are taken from far away on max zoom (see third pic). I’m a bit in awe of this camera’s oomph given how numpty-friendly it is.
Tawny frogmouth chick cuddled up to dad on a branch and looking in the direction of the camera. Chick now sitting in amongst the front of dad, such that you can barely discern him/her.Photo of nest in tree with no zoom (the nest is in the yard behind our next door neighbour’s yard), taken from our back deck.

Made my first chain link by link. Mistakes were made! I learned some things! Now I’m making a more complicated one with two rings per link. Pic 1: Unpolished Pic 2: Polished #silversmith
A handmade sterling silver chain bracelet with alternating large and small links is worn around my left wrist. There is a hammered texture on the small links. It has a toggle clasp. The bracelet has not yet been polished, so is a dull silvery-white. The same handmade sterling silver chain bracelet with alternating large and small links is worn around my left wrist. I gave myself half an hour this morning and got the star blanks cut and the speech bubble stamped and cut. I’m going to refine the bubble so it fits a bit better before soldering, but it was exactly what the design needed! #silversmith #metalwork
Back of a silver pendant. There’s a smiling ghost with a little speech bubble saying “boo!”

BUT… using too many action beats can mess with pacing and obfuscate the focus of a scene. The book I just read had no simple dialogue tags at all; it became obvious the author was bending over backwards to avoid using “he said,” and it ultimately created a lot of the problems with the story.

4️⃣ Overusing fancy dialogue tags "Said" is nearly invisible to readers. But anything else will immediately stand out, like: 🗣️ "Exclaimed" 🗣️ "Hissed" 🗣️ "Bellowed"

From Chapter 6: Daley discovered that it contained five metal coat-hangers, and smelled strongly of mothballs. He hung up three suits, a sports jacket, a pair of trousers, and six shirts, and then closed the doors. ...Is this *supernatural* crime fiction?

This book is a fantastic example of why simple dialogue tags are good, actually. Half the book is taken up with inane stage direction while the author bends over backwards to avoid saying "he said." And the epithets, my god, the epithets...

Update on making Skyrim peaceful for my mother: Found a mod called No Blood Anymore that removes blood decals from the environment -- sounds great! Now I'm encountering incredible scenes like this. Everything so clean and pristine. That is definitely not a blood trail, no. Definitely no murder here.
Screenshot from Skyrim. It is a beautiful sunny day. My Khajiit character and Hilda the goat are standing in a bandit camp north of Whiterun. The bare dirt ground is patchworked by large blank white squares where blood decals have been removed by a mod. Screenshot from Skyrim. My Khajiit is looking at a trail of bright white squares on the ground that lead down the tunnel of a mine. It is definitely not a blood trail. Everything else is normal: some wooden supports to stop the roof caving in; mushrooms growing along the cave walls; exposed roots tangling underfoot.Screenshot from Skyrim. My Khajiit is in a dark ruin looking at a large white square that wraps from the floor up the stone wall. Everything within that square is bright white: a cupboard, lantern, bowl, two wall sconces, a large sack, a wooden beam.Screenshot from Skyrim. My Khajiit is surveying a large underground bar room from an elevated walkway. There is a sequence of bright white squares laid out on the floor like picnic blankets. Upon each is a strange tableau staged in dark silhouette: Two bodies and a table on one; a fallen chair and cooking pot on another; a row of tumbled barstools further back.

Not sure where the recommendation for The Sugar Factory by Dorothee Elmiger came from, but I’m very grateful to whoever brought it to my bookshelf. It has taken way too long to get through in short bursts, so feels like I need to re-read, but even piecemeal it has been a strange and lovely treat.

Since it's a Fatigue Day, I'm putting together a Skyrim mod list for my mother. This one is promising! Simple and to the point! I especially love that combat is ominously capitalised: NOT ATTACKED BY ANIMALS You will not be attacked by animals. However, if you attack an animal it will be Combat.

It's 1677 & you're jonesing for eels. But foreign eels are banned. What to do? You order out! In Sept 1677, Lord Conway wanted eels "very suddenly" & ordered 3 firkins sent from his Irish estates. He offered to send back a guitar in payment but his Dublin agent already had two. 🗃️🧪
Meme. Picture from the 1995 film "Desperado" showing a man and woman walking away from a giant explosion. The man is carrying a guitar case, and has a brace of pistols tucked into his belt in the front. If they go off accidentally he is likely to lose both testicles at the same time. He is wearing a white flowing shirt with an open collar that should probably be more stained than it is. His hair is also flowing behind him even though the blast from the explosion should be pushing it the other way. The woman is wearing all black: a low-cut, short dress and a jacket. Her hair looks wild, and she is carrying a shotgun.

They both have badass expressions on their faces. They will blow up your shit, and look cool doing it.

They are walking away from the explosion, not towards it, so we can assume that they have not come to roast marshmallows. Which is too bad; a guitar case could hold a lot of marshmallows.

Meme text reads:
"I'm sending my man with a guitar
for your eels."

I’ve had to mend the peeling veneer and dings in chipboard in batches due to evasive bulldog clips. Final bunch all clamped up.
Three old speakers face down on a table with their back panels removed. Each one has clamps, bulldog clips, and yellow masking tape at various points on the edge of its chipboard enclosure.
