Excerpt from SmokeWIP, a sage Owen romance novel wip. Text as follows:

Cory hit highway speed, turned up the radio, and screamed.

It began as fuck at top volume and deteriorated into a guttural, punishing howl that left his throat raw. The cigarettes probably hadn't helped, but he'd needed something to poison the hand and mouth fixation, to rewire his brain's connection that smoking would taste like marijuana and flower petals and Matthew's lips.

He gripped the wheel until his knuckles cracked, shook himself, yelled until he was panting, wrung out, more tired than pissed off, more hurt than angry.
Then he kept eyes on the road, let his hand skim radio stations until he found something he could sing along with. He had to put his skin back on. He was Corwin Grant Mercer, happy go lucky son of a gun, bisexual menace and charmer and cowboy. He had a university degree.

He had eclectic taste in music, loved his family, and was not about to have his equilibrium permanently shifted by some pretty man with too many problems who hadn't appreciated him.

Lark looked around, like Grace would be labeled in the crowd.

"She's not here. Dang, I'm sorry, this is so tacky. You already think I have a reputation."

"No, I'm curious! I brought it up. Please?" She batted lashes.

"I had a thing for Grace in school but she never paid me any mind. When she came back from college, she finally saw me. We both knew it was temporary. But, well, sometimes it's worth getting your heart broken just for the joy of being in love in the first place, right?
Matthew's still frothing mad at Grace, even though she never told me a single lie about her intentions."

Billy had an air of shrugging finality, so Lark left it alone. If he let her redirect, she could do the same.
He led her through a dainty twirl and caught her easily back in sure arms. "Go on and tell me some of your messy past, or l'll feel like an ass for spending our night out talking about other women?"

Lark affected apathy. "My career and relationship imploded together. My boyfriend didn't actually like me if I couldn't be his meal ticket. I moved out of our apartment and back to my parents' to lick my wounds. Before him I casually dated, but nothing serious. If guys care, they always feel like they're in competition with my passion."

"Which is?"

"Music."

Billy was nodding. "So you weren't just in Tennessee."

She'd wanted panting, cinematic sex, and they'd steamed up a car with a kiss. They'd warmed up more than that; Lark was as hot and bothered as sex had ever made her, from the work of a chaste embrace. Billy's hands hadn't strayed, one firm and too respectfully steady at her waist, the other moving from cupping her face into her hair, caressing her nape in a delicate sensual hold.

What a man. Since he'd cleaned up for Marlene's, his appeal was infuriating. He hadn't smelled cloyingly of campfire and pine, but instead a subtle clean fragrance she'd immediately liked too much. His hazel eyes were focused, kind, twinklingly lovely. She was unsettled by the plain unguardedness of his interest in her, and fascinated by it too.

His mouth was intent and patient and perfect. On the strength of that kiss, she'd have gladly gone home with him to see what else that mouth-and the rest of him-could do.

Lord, she was a disaster. It had taken, what? Four drinks? For her to turn a complete corner on Billy Mercer.

Matthew swallowed a familiar jolt as he pulled into the parking lot and saw the Sierra. Another frisson of nameless, overwhelming sensation at Cory leaned casually on the tailgate, elbow hooked back, scrolling on his phone, a cigarette dangling between his lips. He didn't know he smoked.

"Hey." He greeted when he got out of his truck. Cory gave him a dry look somewhere between baleful and pitying. "Thanks for meeting me."

"Yeah, well." It was a classic Mercer refrain, a shorthand for it is what it is and what else was I supposed to do and I don't know how to respond to that so let's keep it moving and maybe even a little go fuck yourself for flavor. Smoke curled up out of his mouth like a waterfall.

This was no former athlete, only child of medical professionals. "I've only got an hour."
