Nature and politics fan-girl. 🦘 Pretty-much obsessed with the tawny frogmouths I share my backyard with. Voting yes was the least we could do, given everything, yet we couldn’t even fricken manage to do that. Privileged to be living in Meanjin, Australia.

I think he/she is an only child - quite unusual for this mum and dad. Blending in with dad in the second pic. Again, photos are taken from far away on max zoom (see third pic). I’m a bit in awe of this camera’s oomph given how numpty-friendly it is.
Tawny frogmouth chick cuddled up to dad on a branch and looking in the direction of the camera. Chick now sitting in amongst the front of dad, such that you can barely discern him/her.Photo of nest in tree with no zoom (the nest is in the yard behind our next door neighbour’s yard), taken from our back deck.

There’s a beautiful synergy between the threatened Bogong moth and the critically-endangered Mountain pygmy possum, showing how the lives of our wildlife can intertwine in ways that amaze us.

Next month it’ll be 3 years since the majority of this country voted no. Such a profoundly shameful act. Anyway, Clothing the Gaps has just brought out this new pin, so I got one. Available here (along with free downloads of the same thing in poster form): www.clothingthegaps.com.au/products/sti...
Pin stating Still Yes - text in yellow in the centre and the background as the black and red of the First Nations flag.

Shoutout to anyone out there who takes an interest in my obsession with the tawnies who share this patch with us here. I have zero actual photography skill, and to be honest, I would still post pics of them even if no one else was interested, such is my love for and awe of these lovely wild birds.

I’m a huge fan of trees in our cities. City trees are tough survivors in an environment where they are often under siege. We need more, not fewer, of them. www.abc.net.au/news/2026-09...

Australia needs more homes. But what happens to our trees?
As we build more homes to tackle the housing crisis some worry trees will become collateral damage. But as our climate changes, isn't now the time we need trees most?

Ms Tawny is spending her days closer to Dad and the nest at the moment. She is top right, while Dad on the nest is the dark, amorphous lump in the bottom left of the pic.

Bon weekend from this lovely lady this morning.

Rare sighting of the usually chill Ms Tawny in defensive stick mode, thanks to a crow visit. She generally leaves stick mode to Mr Tawny, but as he’s now on the nest out the back, she has to step up I guess. She somehow still manages to look kinda relaxed though 😀

The Ekka is at its heart a bastion of agrarian conservatism, so it was heartening to see First Nations flags out in force during yesterday’s Grand Parade. You gotta take the little wins when you find ‘em.
Several people riding horses on a grassy arena field. In the foreground, three riders are positioned side by side, facing away from the camera. The rider on the far left holds the Australian Aboriginal Flag, the middle rider holds the Australian National Flag, and the rider on the right holds the Torres Strait Islander Flag. Other horse riders and handlers, mostly wearing formal equestrian gear or western wear, are spread across the field in the background. A green wooden barrier wall and some onlookers stand near the top edge of the frame.A wide, high-angle shot captures a parade passing through the main arena during the Royal Queensland Show (Ekka). In the upper right corner, a white structure features prominent "7NEWS EKKA STUDIO" signage. In the center of the arena, horse riders carry the Australian national and indigenous flags, followed by a long progression of students and agricultural handlers leading sheep across the grass. Many participants wear school uniforms or wide-brimmed hats, and one group carries a maroon and gold school banner. Grandstands filled with spectators are visible on the left side of the arena.

Surely the Jacky Winter is the most adorably-named bird ever. ebird.org/species/jacw...
ebird.org
Jacky-winter - eBird
Small Australian robin, gray-brown above and pale below; often swings tail side to side when perched. Dark tail with prominent white outer tail feathers, absent in similar Kimberley subspecies of Lemon-bellied Flyrobin. Female Hooded Robin similar but with darker wing showing pale panels. Female Golden Whistler much larger and plumper, with a thick bill and yellow lower belly. Usually in pairs in open woodlands, where it perches prominently, often on stumps and posts. Hunts by plucking prey from the ground, in typical Australian robin style.

Spring is nigh - it’s their new nest! Same spot as previous years. A week ago, there was nothing there. I can see bits in there that are recognisably from our backyard 😀. We’ll know there’s eggs when I start seeing Mr Tawny sitting on the nest instead of hanging around with Ms Tawny. I’m thrilled!
