This is the oldest sample of Hebrew text with European musical notation. It's an autograph manuscript of Obadiah the Proselyte, a Norman-Italian priest who converted to Judaism in 1102. He traveled to Egypt and Syria, using his knowledge of Gregorian Chant to record Hebrew poetry. @theul.bsky.social

This article also serves as a shout-out to medievalists, who are all fragmentologists. You can't study printed horae (of any kind) using the most usual bibliographical methods bc they're quant-based. But medievalists are accustomed to working w/tatters. Good work can come of it- so reach into 16thc!

I am currently in Paris and so obligated to share a French fragment. This one isn't *in* French (though there is a nontrivial amount of French in the Genizah), but it was copied in France in the ~11th century. It's a piece of the 1st-c. poem "Illias Latina," an abridged Latin version of the Illiad.
Thin, semi-rectangular vertical light brown parchment strip measuring about 2 inches in height. It contains 12 lines of Latin text in brown ink, although only about 2 words survive from each line. The fragment sits on a blue background next to a yellow label that reads T-S Misc.27.2.d (https://cudl.lib.cam.ac.uk/view/MS-TS-MISC-00027-00002-D/1)

This is one of my favorite fragments. It's a late medieval copy of "Gates of Repentance" by the 13th-century Catalonian rabbi, Jonah Gerondi. Not exactly a page-turner, but someone sketched a pair of bearded warriors duelling in the margin. They're likely based on Mamluk or Ottoman soldiers.
Small light-brown paper folio from a book, badly torn at the top and water-stained. About 20 lines of Hebrew text are visibl in faded brown-black ink. Sketches of two beared warriors appear in the lower margine, one holding a lance & shield atop a charging horse, and the facing the charger with a drawn bow & arrow. The leaf sits on a blue background with a white label that reads T-S NS 324.3 (https://cudl.lib.cam.ac.uk/view/MS-TS-NS-00324-00003/1).

A full-page illumination with an arch beneath the starry heavens, and a bird of some sort holding a banner "Ve. ve. ve."
Under the arch, we have Hildegard of Bingen, in full nunnish regalia, with a pigeon nipping at her veil, is surrounded by books that she has written, as well as blank ones that she has perhaps yet to write, wherever she may be. She is holding in her right hand a wax tablet, and the in left clutching a stylus - or so we like to think. the background blue and the grass is green. Pretty cool, huh?

This Arabic amulet was printed (yes, printed) in Egypt sometime around 1000 CE, at least four centuries before Gutenberg. It begins with the Shahada and quotes chapters from the Quran (1, 112, 113, 114). The long vertical format was meant to imitate the appearance of ancient Egyptian papyrus rolls.
Long vertical strip of light brown rag paper printed with ~40 lines of Arabic text in black ink. The top has a printed roundel containing large Arabic script, followed by a block of even larger calligraphic text that repeatedly invokes الله. Below this section is a column of quotations from the Quran. The leaf is torn at the top and bottom and sits on a blue background next to a yellow label that reads T-S Ar.20.1 (https://cudl.lib.cam.ac.uk/view/MS-TS-AR-00020-00001/1).

This is a 12th-century list of property that a fabulously wealthy Egyptian Jewish woman is bringing into her marriage (and what she's owed in case of divorce). Items include a gold tiara (80 dinars), a crystal rooster (4 dinars), a Chinese pen set (13 dinars), and 250(!) dinars' worth of books.

This is a page from Moses Nahmanides' commentary on the Torah, printed by Eliezer Toledano in 1489 at his publishing house in Lisbon. The fingerprints on the left likely belong to him or one of his assistants. Jewish printers were ultimately driven out of Iberia by Catholic persecution in the 1490s.
Bright yellow-white paper folio with about 30 lines of printed black Hebrew text in two columns. The left margin has an impression of the top knuckles from 4 fingers of a left hand, made from the same ink as the printed text. The fingerprints are clearly visible.

A small red stamp at the bottom of the page reads "University Library Cambridge." The leaf sits on a blue background next to a yellow label that reads T-S Misc.12.29.4 P14 (https://cudl.lib.cam.ac.uk/view/MS-TS-MISC-00012-00029-00004/27)
