One for the #Reformation experts: I reread #Luther ’s Assertio (1520) with the passage below on #FreeWill (🇬🇧 in the ALT text). Isn’t this a deliberate provocation of #Erasmus, four years before their famous dispute broke out? SecLit seems to be silent about it. Thoughts, hints? #Earlymodern 🗃️
Luther, Assertio omnium articulorum, Wittenberg 1520, fol. h5r: "Scripture is abundant on the subject [of the bound will], but it has been so ravaged by out Nebuchadnezzar [=the pope] that the very form and knowledge of the letters is gone, and we need some new Esdras who will discover new letters/a new language and recover the Bible for us once more, which I hope is now being done as the Hebrew and Greek languages are flourishing all over the world."
