The gradient squares are growing

A work in progress cross stitch of a modern gradient square pattern (by me!) of green and blue (so far) gradient squares in vertical rows, on black evenweave.

Commentaries done! I'll put them up tomorrow, whoosh, I'm tired. Gonna watch some House of Lies and do some cross-stitch.

I just think 'one day this is all we'll have left' because for that area, that is all they have left. That is literally how the public art frequently functions. A reminder of what we ruined, or what could have been. An unintentional knife-wound of false representation instead of real lives.

I have a feeling of profound melancholy whenever I see public street art of once-native animals in an area. Amazing graffiti of splendid fairy wrens in a place they don't exist anymore. Black swans in a suburb with no lakes. Banksias where the kwongan has been razed. Is it supposed to feel good?

Sketch inspired by a Tumblr post (this one: www.tumblr.com/thermie/8288...) - Presenting the Montana Snail.

A digital sketch by Pia Ravenari in a more painterly style of the photo of the above "montana snail" which depicts a buck (deer) lying behind a hay bale in such a way as to make the deer look like the head of a snail and the bale look like the shell. The sketch has some grass in the foreground and an olive green background and is mostly earth-toned.

Joubin's squid (Joubiniteuthis portieri) is a funky, little squid that looks like one of those head massagers. It has a max mantle length of 9 cm and a long tail which is thought to mimic sinophores. They are also the closest relatives to the even more lanky bigfin squids (Magnapinna) #SQUIDtember

Joubin's Squid (Joubiniteuthis portieri) floating in the ocean. The squid is very thin and has a orange colour. It has a long tail extending from its mantle and is waving in the water. Its arms are long and thin, and are extending out and curling back in. The arms are a slightly orange off white.

The gradient squares continue. (Using Cottage Garden Threads gradient packs for these with a DMC white.)

A photo of a work in progress cross stitch depicting 3 vertical rows of gradient squares (some unfinished) with one row in green and another in blue. There is a horizontal band with the same colours along the bottom. It looks modern and symmetrical despite the different colours.

The gradient squares are spreading! It’s all fun and games until you’re looking at 12 identical gradient squares - but I’m enjoying this modern cross stitch pattern and it’s visually satisfying.

A photo of a work in progress cross stitch of green and blue gradient squares on black evenweave. The squares run six down vertically with the finished green gradient squares in the middle. It is a modern style design.

Guess what's finished! I suppose I should share a full view of it here now, huh? Here it is before and after adding backstitch outlines. I don't often use much backstitch for these pieces, but this one definitely needed it.

The same image as in the previous picture, but now there are outlines adding more detail. The bark of the trees has texture, the flowers have more definition, and the fairy's wings have visible veins.
