(This isn't a "Pia needs reassurance" post, btw, it's just realistic. I would like my heart to not kill me. And I also wish my energy levels would return from the war. And I wish I could understand better how to do marketing without it feeling like gross marketing)

I'll figure it out. Or maybe I won't. Or maybe I got super mid at writing and just don't know it yet.

Also ngl with like, this year being the worst downturn re: writing income in years (it can't all be blamed on a financial crisis when other authors are doing great), trying to ride the tightrope that is 'income pays medical bills' vs. 'need to rest so I don't get as many medical bills' is cryworthy

But also my heart might have been trying to kill me so I don't know. (Also means I just can't maintain magnesium via whatever I'm eating right now, I *have* to supplement and just deal with the side effects. Le sigh).

Okay actually I don't like finding out magnesium deficiency can kill you the hard way, to be honest, and once more skipping the queue at a very busy ER/ED is not actually as much fun as it sounds. :/ I also feel bad for everyone else suffering who is like 'why do THEY get admitted immediately.'

Le Guin on the idea that there is a secret to getting good at writing.
I will dispose of the first myth as quickly as possible. The “secret” is skill. If you haven’t learned how to do something, the people who have may seem to be magicians, possessors of mysterious secrets. In a fairly simple art, such as making pie crust, there are certain teachable “secrets” of method that lead almost infallibly to good results; but in any complex art, such as housekeeping, piano-playing, clothes-making, or story-writing, there are so many techniques, skills, choices of method, so many variables, so many “secrets,” some teachable and some not, that you can learn them only by methodical, repeated, long-continued practice — in other words, by work.

I will never get tired of purple enamel orchids. Endemic to the state, so shiny you can see your reflection in the petals, nature outdoing itself as usual!
A photo of two purple enamel orchids in Western Australian bushland. They are a vibrant violet with crimson tips, and have five petals that curl backwards slightly. The petals are glossy and shiny in a way rarely seen on any flowers in nature. If you didn’t know better you’d think they were made of enamel or stone. But they are growing among dry bushland.

Pleeeeeeeaaaaaaase tell me that all those "you should need a government ID to access the internet" people are rethinking this position now. [We know they aren't. Ed.]
The first two paragraphs of the linked-to story:

"Denmark has suffered a major data breach that has given unauthorised individuals access to names, addresses and personal identification numbers belonging to about 8.8 million people registered in the country’s central population database.

"The breach occurred after unidentified individuals misused a private Danish company’s legitimate access to search the Central Person Register (CPR), the government said in a statement Monday."

When we say completely boycotting HP is the least cis people can do, it literally is the very least they can do. There is no lesser, easier act of allyship. It is the lowest of low bars, and so many people are desperate for excuses that let them not clear it and still call themselves "allies".

That’s basically the trick of cross stitch! You can’t focus on the destination because it’s so far away. A full coverage project as your first is pretty intense even if it is smaller!

It’s a complicated grief that govs/we spend hundreds of millions on fences to preserve tiny pockets for native animals / biomes against feral animal damage, because they cannot survive on their own land anymore. Culling is emotional, but losing a species or ecosystem permanently is unspeakable.

I've heard people make claims that AI would lead to a new Renaissance, but I didn't imagine it'd happen like this:
Screenshot of a Tweet from Pope Leo XIV. It reads:

"In this era of artificial intelligence, it is becoming urgen to distinguish human art from what machines produce. There is an ontological difference, even before an aesthetic one, between art and what a machine can generate through statistical calculation based on millions of images created by others. Algorithms lack the spark of humanity. For this reason, the Church wishes to renew an alliance with artists and cultural institutions to safeguard our humanity."

I love this kind of public art as well, but I almost wish it wasn't so 'I am drawing beings that used to live here on buildings that literally took that opportunity away.' Idk. It's just complicated. Love the art. But the grief is what follows me home after seeing it.

Mx Pia Foxhall @foxhall.bsky.social · 28/09/2026
I just think 'one day this is all we'll have left' because for that area, that is all they have left. That is literally how the public art frequently functions. A reminder of what we ruined, or what could have been. An unintentional knife-wound of false representation instead of real lives.

Mx Pia Foxhall @foxhall.bsky.social · 28/09/2026
Yes, the art is extremely beautiful, but it's also evidence of what we destroyed. Incredible flora and fauna on the side of silos on grain fields as far as the eyes can see, where the flora and fauna has been obliterated.

I have a feeling of profound melancholy whenever I see public street art of once-native animals in an area. Amazing graffiti of splendid fairy wrens in a place they don't exist anymore. Black swans in a suburb with no lakes. Banksias where the kwongan has been razed. Is it supposed to feel good?

Sketch inspired by a Tumblr post (this one: www.tumblr.com/thermie/8288...) - Presenting the Montana Snail.
A digital sketch by Pia Ravenari in a more painterly style of the photo of the above "montana snail" which depicts a buck (deer) lying behind a hay bale in such a way as to make the deer look like the head of a snail and the bale look like the shell. The sketch has some grass in the foreground and an olive green background and is mostly earth-toned.

Joubin's squid (Joubiniteuthis portieri) is a funky, little squid that looks like one of those head massagers. It has a max mantle length of 9 cm and a long tail which is thought to mimic sinophores. They are also the closest relatives to the even more lanky bigfin squids (Magnapinna) #SQUIDtember

Guess what's finished! I suppose I should share a full view of it here now, huh? Here it is before and after adding backstitch outlines. I don't often use much backstitch for these pieces, but this one definitely needed it.
Cross stitch of a purple, winged fairy seen in profile, holding out three blue blossoms that are each the size of their head. They are framed on either side by two tall trees with purple leaves drooping down along the top of frame. At the bottom are grassy mounds, leafy plants, a few mushrooms, and many more blue blossoms. The same image as in the previous picture, but now there are outlines adding more detail. The bark of the trees has texture, the flowers have more definition, and the fairy's wings have visible veins.
