Thread. Apologies in advance, I've been grinding away for weeks on a grant with maybe a 10% success rate. Canadian researchers work in buildings held together with duct tape, run labs on shoestrings, and spend more and more time competing for lower and lower success rate operating programs.

Then we monitored them for a few days and surprisingly the muscle reassemble perfectly in a few days. 🤯 Since we could believe it, we used a bunch of different tools to test the recovery and now we can safely say that adult insects can remodel their myofibrils from a soup of cellular debris.

Making flies move until their muscles get damage is hard because they don't listen to us. Instead we use genetic tricks. We use light and heat ion channels to cause massive amounts of cellular damage in muscles. Polarization microscopy pictures:

Vertebrates can remodel their muscles to repair them from mechanical damage, anyone going a gym knows this. But it was not clear weather insects can also repair their muscles. So use use the Drosophila fruit flies legs to test it.

Car free school streets - why delay? We support this proposed motion from the Active Transportation Advisory Committee urging HRM to produce an evidence-based final report www.halifax.ca/sites/defaul...
Date of Meeting: August 13, 2026
Subject: HRM-Led School Streets Pilot Program
Motion for Active Transportation Advisory Committee to Consider:
That the Active Transportation Advisory Committee recommend that the Transportation Standing Committee request the Chief Administrative Officer direct staff to prepare a report
on the HRM-led School Streets Pilot Program, as directed by Regional Council on November 14, 2023. The report should take into consideration the presentation received by the Active
Transportation Advisory Committee on April 16, 2026 regarding the 2024 Walk ’n Roll-led School Streets Pilot, including its outcomes, lessons learned, and recommendations.
Reason: The School Streets Pilot Program led by the Halifax Regional Municipality was not assessed based on all available data and insufficient reasoning and evidence was provided by HRM for not
moving forward with a School Streets Program.
Outcome Sought: For a staff report to prepare, considering the outcomes of the School Streets Pilot Program, which takes into account all available evidence, including the Walk ’n Roll led pilot program.

Watermelon (Citrullus lanatus) has many extant relatives, but they're all bitter, with no red flesh. We know the Egyptians prized them because of depictions in at least 3 tombs. One tomb, at Deir el Bahari, near Luxor, contained a mummy in a re-used sarcophagus, wrapped in unknown leaves.
