This may be a little awkward, but this is why I think the discussion around "AI doomerism" is kinda broken.. Imagine a political compass. On the X axis, put "AI works". On the Y axis, put "AI is an existential threat to humanity".

"AI doesn't work. AI is not an existential threat": Pure skepticism gets you here.

"AI works. AI is not an existential threat": The conventional tech press is here.

"AI works. AI is an existential threat": OpenAI and Anthropic are here, and everyone is reasonably making fun of them for it…
