Historical illustration showing five vibrantly colored fish with exaggerated features. The largest fish at top left has a bulky body with bold stripes in pink, yellow, and blue-green, sharp teeth, spiny dorsal fins, and rounded tail fins. Below it, a rounded angelfish with a prominent, bulbous head displays a pink body, green face, and yellow-striped fins with black dots on the chest fin. Other fish include a slender, striped fish with fin rays resembling spikes, a stout fish with vivid pink, green, and yellow markings, and the smallest, a yellow fish adorned with black diamond patterns and green fins. Each fish is labeled with number and French descriptions.

Historical illustration from 1754 showing four stylized, vibrantly colored fish labeled 9 to 12. Fish 9 is elongated, pink with green fins and a notable open mouth with sharp teeth. Fish 10 is round and deep blue-gray with yellow and red striped patterns near its head and red eye. Fish 11 is small, pink with yellow and orange markings and a whimsical expression. Fish 12 is greenish with an aggressive face, large mouth with teeth, and yellow fins. The detailed, imaginative colors and shapes reflect an 18th-century artistic approach to marine life, blending real and fantastical elements linked to the concept of a "unicorn" in mythical symbolism.

Smith, Musilova & @astridboehne@bsky.social find new sex chromosomes in a group of cichlids from Lake Tanganyika and show that while these involve the same chromosome pairs, the sex chromosomes evolved independently. 🔗 academic.oup.com/gbe/article/... #societyjournal #genome #evolution
GBE | Same Sex Chromosomes With Independent Origins in Haplochromine Cichlids

Known sex chromosomes, and sex-linked regions thereof, of African haplochromine cichlid fishes, relative to the genome of Astatotilapia calliptera (bottom-left illustration). While there is great diversity of sex chromosomes and regions of sex linkage across this clade, LG5 and LG7 frequently reappear as sex-linked, particularly within the Lake Tanganyika-specific tribe of haplochromines, the Tropheini. Sex-linked regions on LG5 and LG7 are shown, highlighted in blue for XY systems and orange for ZW systems. In species in which sex-linkage is not known, this is marked with ‘?’. Other known sex chromosomes are listed on the right. Species included in this study are marked in bold. Proposed origins of different sex determination systems or genes are shown with yellow arrows on tree branches, while losses are shown with black arrows.

Illustration of a fish with blue-gray scales along its back and a lighter, almost white belly. It has a large, round orange eye with a black pupil and a small open mouth. The fish's fins, including the tail fin, are detailed with visible rays. The background is an aged handwritten manuscript page with cursive text faintly visible behind the fish drawing. The image appears to be a historic hand-painted naturalist illustration from the early 19th century. Despite the title mentioning kangaroo, the main subject shown is the fish, labeled "The Herrong" on the page.

Historical black and white illustration of a fish labeled "Monoceros biaculeatus," resembling a unicorn fish. The fish has a deep, laterally compressed body with large, detailed dorsal and anal fins covered in fine lines. Its head features a prominent, pointed horn-like projection above its large round eye, evoking a unicorn's horn. The tail fin is forked, with two distinct circular markings near its base. The image is signed by J.F. Hennig and appears on aged paper, from an 1801 ichthyology volume by M.E. Bloch, emphasizing intricate linework and anatomical detail.

Our new paper in Science Advances asks how animals' genomes have changed since their origin from a common ancestor over 600 million years ago, and what patterns in their DNA have arisen in the churn of speciation and extinction. www.science.org/doi/10.1126/...
Five-panel diagram explaining fusion-with-mixing in chromosome evolution. Red and blue represent two different ancestral chromosomes throughout.

A, Fusion-with-mixing: a red chromosome and a blue chromosome fuse into one half-red, half-blue bar. Down the page, successive rows show inversions, drawn as X-shaped crossings between rows, progressively interleaving the two colors until the bottom bar is finely striped. A widening gray wedge labeled Entropy runs alongside an arrow marked Time plus evolution, pointing down.

B, Independent regulation: two separate chromosomes, one red and one blue. In each, a regulatory element, drawn as an oval, acts by an arrow on a gene within its own chromosome only.

C, FWM and novel regulation: on a fused, mixed chromosome, a red gene and a blue gene now sit next to each other across an inversion breakpoint. Red and blue arrows show regulatory elements reaching across it to act on the other chromosome's gene.

D, Regulatory entanglement: an extensively mixed chromosome, finely striped. Below it, a row of alternating red and blue genes is linked by a dense web of crossing curved arrows, so many overlapping regulatory connections that unmixing the chromosome would break them.

E, Emergence of entangled loci: a five-species phylogeny. A red and a blue chromosome fuse at an ancestral node, and helical icons on later branches mark continued mixing. Colored boxes mark four new red-blue regulatory interactions arising after inversions. Species A keeps its two chromosomes separate. In species B through E, the two earliest interactions, cyan boxes 1 and 2, are present in every descendant lineage, while later ones, yellow 3 and magenta 4, appear in fewer.

The Complete Genome of a Songbirda major milestone in bird genomics

This new genome closes nearly all previous gaps, including complex heterochromatic regions, microchromosomes, and sex chromosomes. Built using a combination of PacBio HiFi long reads, ONT ultra-long reads, Arima Genomics Hi-C reads for chromosome scaffolding, and Illumina parental short reads for haplotype phasing, this T2T assembly provides an unprecented view of the zebra finch genome and advances research of vocal learning and evolution.featured in a special issue in Cell
