I know I've shared this illustration for #SundayFishSketch a few times now, but I'm sharing it again because it was accepted into the Minnesota State Fair fine arts building and is currently on display. So, if you're headed to the fair check it and the other amazing art out!
An illustration of a Burbot (a type of fish) swimming in deep water. The water is dark - almost black - and the bottom is a mixture of sand, silt, and rocks. The burbot is in three-quarter view, and the front is illuminated while the back fades into the background. A school of small, nondescript silver fish swim beneath the burbot.

We often hear from folks who think they've caught a snakehead in Michigan. It's never a snakehead - it's nearly always a bowfin, or, occasionally, a burbot. Unfortunately, the fish often don't survive the encounter due to the misidentification. Check out this handy article to learn the differences!

treasure hunt, except you're spotting aquatic invasive species!
It's easy to help - if you see an unfamiliar aquatic plant, a
strange critter, or even something you have heard about (like
zebra mussels or Eurasian watermilfoil), snap a quick photo
using the free iNaturalist app.
Your photos turn everyday nature observations into valuable
scientific data, helping scientists and natural resource

Have been working on an illustration of Chiasmodon niger and decided to modify it a bit to fit today's #SundayFishSketch theme.
An in progress illustration of a Black Swallower fish. This fish lives in the deep sea and is brown to black in color with a long, thin body. It has a pretty large eye and very large mouth that leads to a stomach that can extend to several times its regular size, sometimes even becoming partly transparent. This allows the fish to eat prey larger than itself. In this illustration, I added some colorful Easter eggs in its stomach to fit with the Sunday Fish Sketch theme.

A full-colour proof of an interpretive panel about the fish and other animals that live in Manitoba's Assiniboine River titled Below the Surface. It divides the river up into the Littoral zone near shore, the pelagic zone in the middle and the benthic zone at the bottom. The the littoral zone are northern pike, yellow perch, and leopard frogs. The pelagic zone has walleye, channel catfish, phytoplankton, zooplankton and emerald shiners. There are burbot, mussels, tube worms and mayfly nymphs in the benthic zone. Rock bass and longnose dace live in the riffles near shore. The bottom of the panel talks about the reintroduction of lake sturgeon to the river. A poster titled Bees and Beyond - Woodland Pollinators. It is a complex and colourful illustration of plants and their pollinators. On the left we have red columbine pollinated by a ruby-throated hummingbird. There are also purple harebells, wild strawberries and downy yellow violets. There is a yellow and black hover fly on the strawberries.
