The Original Sin of politics was the invention of the passive voice, when Adam and Eve ate of the Tree of Vague Unaccountability. Wild how all those violent ICE agents just … got hired … and deployed … somehow. Who can possibly say how? It’s all a mystery.

Justin, it was a bad take. Consider these comments as "lunch with someone you disagree with". If you are getting ratioed, perhaps consider it is you who should change perspective, not us.

This is about job incentives, not peer-review or journal formats. My point is that as long as hiring and promotion committees base performance on traditional style peer-reviewed articles, then that's the only type of work that people will produce. You need to fix the incentives first.

Unless it's peer-reviewed and citable with an author list, then it won't matter. You can put all your data on bluesky right now if you want. It's just that promotion committees don't value anything except peer-reviewed papers. Fix that first.

Same here. watchOS killed timers. Takes 10s just to respond, if it responds at all, and says "Sorry I can't set a timer right now". #ios failure.

My perspective on reading is the same as on exercise. The best exercise is one you enjoy and want to do again. The best book to read is one that makes you want to keep reading. Unless you're designing a literature or PE syllabus, do things you enjoy! Slogging through "classics" isn't extra points.

Trump has never offered much in the way of material goods or transfers to his voters. He engages in displays of dominance, they derive a sense of status and prestige from those displays. It's a symbolic economy that rests on a cult of personality, in which his diehard fans are eternal marks.

I wish NIH officials (or former ones in this case) would understand what PIs cannot do ourselves, because of NIH and institutional rules. Pretty easy to say "the PIs can do it themselves" when it's never that simple, I assure you.

Trump is promising to boost the U.S. economy by making it harder for Americans to trade with the rest of the world. He is also promising to destroy Iran's economy by making it harder for Iranians to trade with the rest of the world.

SARS-CoV-2 did not come from a lab. There is no evidence pointing to laboratory origins. There’s been a massive disinformation campaign to convince the public otherwise. It’s scary how effective that campaign has been.

Can you be more specific about what we are supposed to "do about it"? I'm sick of people vaguely gesturing at us on the left, who hold no power, and complaining that we aren't doing enough. What are we supposed to do exactly?
