Where, how, and with whom children spend their time affects opportunities individual exploration and social transmission. Time allocation analysis of BaYaka children reveals rich opportunities for learning about the social and physical environment, and horizontal (peer-to-peer) transmission.

“BaYaka children spent most of their time alone or in child-only groups, rather than with adults. They also spent a third of their time in play activities and another third in foraging and domestic tasks, suggesting that play and work are complementary flexible learning mechanisms”

On the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, we acknowledge and reflect on the deep intergenerational harm residential schools have caused to Indigenous families and communities. Art by Elaine Landry #OrangeShirtDay #EveryChildMatters #TruthAndReconciliation
A handprint on an orange background. The handprint is broken into segments, inside of which are different symbols representing elements of Indigenous culture, including animal paw prints, landscapes with trees, and other images drawn from nature. There is a large black eagle feather on the left side of the handprint, and bird silhouettes appear in the upper left hand corner of the image. The words EVERY CHILD MATTERS appear at the bottom of the piece.

The previous executive editor of #AnimalBehaviourJournal, @andyradford.bsky.social, makes it clear at #ECBB2026 that they're not desk rejecting work for the sake of it - if it meets the basic conditions, it'll go to review! And don't be discouraged if you're asked to revise, that's normal 😊
* Executive Editor
* Decides whether the paper should be assigned to an Editor or rejected without further review (upfront rejection)
* What is the basis for an upfront rejection?
* Content does not fall with the remit of the journal
* Too narrowly focused taxonomically and lacking in any clear broad theoretical advance (absence of general hypotheses on evolution and mechanisms of behavior
* Guide to Authors: Work should test explicit hypotheses rather than being purely descriptive... preference is given to studies that are likely to be of interest and/or applicable to the broad readership of the journal

These ratio outcome variables are a plague in the sciences. If your analysis treats 1/2 and 10/20 as the same evidence, then you have discarded uncertainty in the outcome. Model what you measure, not what you construct. Use the denominator as an exposure instead.
