Unfortunately this is simply disinformation by @lizwebster.bsky.social that will delay if not sabotage any efforts by the UK to join (not "rejoin") the European Union. If even your "pro-EU" leadership is unable to make the positive case for Euro & other achievements, you don't belong in the Union.

As a federalist, I'm quite baffled that even pro-federalist movements still lack the confidence and ambition for a truly sovereign and independent European Union. Operating outside the EU framework, or bringing on board third countries is the quickest recipe for disaster. Build the EU core first!

While agreeing fully, I’m at times baffled by the lack of consistency of people asking to use correct language and terminology when talking about the European Union (and I support it), and then calling the EU a “bloc”, which is incorrect and misleading.

When I see this type of framing and reporting, I find it useful to go back to this important point. Framing by English, American and other third country media is not neutral. Hence, to be taken in consideration with broader interests/agendas at play. davekeating.substack.com/p/debunking-...

Debunking the myth of UK and US media's 'neutral gaze'
US-and-UK-based publications dominate international news, casting themselves as neutral observers. Given the state of these two countries, it's time for Europeans to challenge this.

“But let’s be clear here: there is no such thing as “associate membership” of the European Union. The very idea is antithetical to the ideals of federalism and ever-closer-union, because such arrangements are for blocs, not for unions.” I wish journalists across Europe and beyond understood this.

Incredibly, both sides of this british-only discussion involving the EU and its possible reactions, 1) fail to ask relevant EU officials, 2) fail to understand the political dimension of the Union, and how the EU could act/react in completely different ways based on political decisions & priorities.

Today, Chancellor Merz is today hosting a meeting of the frugals (🇩🇪🇦🇹🇳🇱🇩🇰🇸🇪🇫🇮) in Berlin demanding cuts to the EU budget Here's how that "bloated" 🇪🇺budget compares: Federations: 🇪🇺: 1% of GDP 🇩🇪: 12% 🇺🇸: 24% Unitary states: 🇳🇱: 46% 🇫🇷: 57% They's tasking 🇪🇺 to do more, but then starving it of 💶 to do it

Northern leaders want to cut an EU budget already on a shoestring
EU national leaders keep saying they want a union that “does more.” Then they show up in Brussels asking it to spend less.

What's important to clarify, which the UKICE and other UK organizations and pundits fail to do, is that this is neither exhaustive nor a binding path; simply a set of possible scenarios that are not tested and that rely on assumptions that are often outdated. More for domestic education than policy.

For the UK to ever rejoin the EU, they must develop a clear appreciation of what they are joining: a federal project. Thatcher was right about that. If the UK thinks there is some Geoffrey Howe “third way” (the notion EU is just econ project) - Brexit will just be repeated.

As long as this is the framing, the Uk will not only never join the Union, but relationship with EU will actually sour even more. 1) No UK government can get the UK back into SM or any other EU institutions/initiatives. It’s not in their power. Only EU will decide depending on its interests. 2)..

The problem here is that France wants a strong common EU foreign policy "strategic autonomy" AND total national control of foreign policy. The only way to make EU foreign policy strong and coherent is for states to give up control. Europe needs to make the trade: sovereignty for power.

Okay. Makes sense. Now press Germany/Nordics/Visegrad/Balts on treaty reform. The current problem with the enlargement discussion is that it is all about what Ukraine needs to do… and not what Europe needs to do. But the EU ain’t enlarging unless there is treaty reform - and an end to unanimity.

The case for having the UK in the Union has not been made in the UK, and even less so in Europe. The UK membership would entail trade offs and costs for the EU and MS. The UK seems unable to acknowledge them and make a coherent proposal appealing to Europe to counterbalance these costs. 1/
