“Our focus should be solving problems that we’re seeing happening,” she said, pointing to cost-of-living issues around health care, housing and energy. “That’s where our focus should be — not weaponizing the federal government.”

Sen. Dick Durbin, a retiring Illinois Democrat who serves as the party’s leader on the Judiciary Committee, said in an interview that if companies have not violated the law, “then I wouldn’t give them any special attention.”
“If there’s a question of whether they violated the law — serious matter,” he said.
Asked about the ballroom contributions, Durbin said, “I don’t think that’s a crime. The courts may see it differently, but until someone proves to me otherwise, I don’t think that’s anything that should be investigated.”

“If they engaged in corrupt activities in response to corrupt pressure from the Trump family, that’s one class of concerns,” the Illinois Democrat said. “If they simply had their arms twisted into making a contribution to one of President Trump’s vanity projects, that’s annoying but a lower level of concern.”

I remember my father telling me how anti trust laws worked as a kid. Something like "Well son, we have laws where one electric company can't just buy all the OTHER electric companies. Adding to the slew of campaign promises Mamdani has broken: Personally deploying the NYPD to assist ICE agents in an arrest.
After yesterday's Politico report, we can now confirm Zohran directly deployed the NYPD SRG to crackdown on protesters who were protecting a Nigerian man from being assaulted and arrested by ICE agents. A violation of his pledge that NYPD would
"Under no circumstances" assist ICE agents and, of course, his promise to disband the SRG. ICE arrests were not allowed at hospitals until 2025. By sending his police force to drag away the crowd and clear a path for the ICE agents (whom his NYPD officers helped load the undocumented migrant into their car), Mamdani himself ultimately assisted ICE in arresting this poor man.

it is very cool (read: very not cool) that "What if the entire regional economy immediately exploded?" is a ballot measure in the bay area because we are in the 'touching the hot stove' era of american history. if you live in the bay area you should vote for the regional transit measure.

The ballot initiative would raise the sales tax rate by 0.5 percentage points in San Mateo, Santa Clara, Contra Costa and Alameda counties and by 1 percentage point in San Francisco, and is expected to generate roughly $980 million annually for the next 14 years to sustain bus, train, metro and ferry lines.

Many of the region’s transit agencies have already proposed contingency plans if the measure fails. BART said it would likely have to end service at 9 p.m. instead of at midnight, reduce train frequencies to 30 minutes and move from five-line to three-line service outside of peak commute hours. Caltrain has proposed eliminating weekend services, closing more than a third of stations and ending operations around 9 p.m. instead of 1 a.m. AC Transit is looking at reducing service by 16%, while Muni said it could eliminate up to 20 routes, cut service by at least 30% and end regular evening service.

The fiscal cliff facing transit agencies was triggered by the decline in ridership due to the pandemic and hit agencies heavily dependent on fare revenues, like BART, the hardest.

SPUR, a nonprofit policy think tank sponsoring the measure, released a report last month that found that if the measure and San Francisco’s Proposition H fail, traffic delays on the Bay Bridge could increase by 33 minutes heading west in the morning and 43 minutes heading east in the evening. Caldecott Tunnel traffic could see delays of an additional 20 minutes in the morning and 27 minutes during the evening commute. Congestion could also worsen along Interstate 580, Interstate 680 and U.S. 101, the report found.
