I’m quoted in this excellent Scientific American article on the incredible Zagros mountains, the focus of much of my PhD and postdoc research. The Zagros’s unique tectonic history explains the Gulf’s rich oil and gas reserves and ultimately the Gulf itself, including the narrow Strait of Hormuz.

⚒️🧪Fiery Mud Volcano Eruption! The Daşmərdan (Dashmardan) mud volcano in Azerbaijan erupted ~16:50 on the 30th Jan 2026. The eruption lasted ~15 mins and was accompanied by a pillar of flame several hundred meters high. Daşmərdan had previous documented eruptions in 1866, 1954, 1976, 1986 and 2011.

My take on why the proposed northern pipeline is incredibly risky without 1st doing some basic geological due diligence. BC’s N Coast & interior are criss-crossed with faults but seismic & geodetic monitoring is rudimentary and we simply don’t know what’s active. www.theguardian.com/world/2025/d...

Fish in the forest, seaweed in trees? Yes - 13 years ago tonight, the M7.8 #HaidaGwaii earthquake generated the world's largest #tsunami of 2012. Runup to 13m in some inlets left seaweed in trees and fish in the forest. If you are near water and feel long and strong shaking, go to high ground. 🧪🌊⚒️
